The statement that BEST describes the relationship between Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education is that the Brown decision overturned the Plessy decision.

The landmark Supreme Court decision in 1954 for Brown v. Board of Education ruled unanimously that racial segregation in public education violated the Constitution, effectively dismantling the concept of "separate but equal" as established by Plessy v. Ferguson. The Court's declaration that "separate is inherently unequal" marked the beginning of the end for de jure segregation in public schools, a major step forward for the civil rights movement.

Which of the following best explains some of the powers granted the Congress by the Articles of Confederation?

Answers

The best option is "Congress could declare war, make treaties, create a mail delivery system, and print money" (option B).

Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress was granted several key powers to manage the new nation, although its authority was limited compared to later federal structures. Congress could declare war, which was essential for defending the nation and negotiating peace; make treaties with foreign nations, which was crucial for establishing international relations; create a mail delivery system to facilitate communication across states; and print money to help manage the economy.

However, these powers were often insufficient, leading to challenges such as financial instability and difficulty in enforcing laws, which eventually contributed to the drafting of the U.S. Constitution to create a more robust federal government.

Compare president Johnson’s success in the civil rights movement with president Kennedy’s civil rights achievements?

Answers

Final answer:

President Lyndon B. Johnson was more successful in enacting civil rights legislation than President Kennedy, pushing through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other measures by leveraging his political skill and continuing Kennedy's legacy.

Explanation:

Comparison of Civil Rights Achievements: Johnson vs. Kennedy

When comparing the civil rights achievements of President Lyndon B. Johnson to those of President John F. Kennedy, it is evident that Johnson had more legislative success. While Kennedy laid the groundwork for civil rights legislation and promoted the expansion of civil rights, his focus was divided, and he was cautious in his support due to political pressures. However, following the assassination of Kennedy, Johnson utilized his political acumen and the call to continue the work of his predecessor to push through significant civil rights legislation, most notably the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination and established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Furthermore, Johnson's administration endorsed further civil rights advances within his Great Society initiatives, emphasizing the eradication of poverty and the advancement of civil rights.

Kennedy's efforts, while earnest, were more cautious and tempered by his focus on foreign policy and the political climate of the time. His administration saw initial attempts to improve African Americans' rights to vote, employment, and education opportunities. However, it was under Johnson that the most impactful civil rights legislation was enacted. Johnson's extensive experience in politics, especially in maneuvering within the legislature, allowed for decisive actions such as breaking a Senate filibuster to pass Kennedy's proposed civil rights bill. This act, and further measures such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965, cemented Johnson's legacy in the civil rights movement.

President Kennedy faced significant resistance and was unable to pass civil rights legislation during his term. In contrast, President Johnson successfully enacted the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a monumental achievement in civil rights history.

Comparing President Johnson’s success in the civil rights movement to President Kennedy’s civil rights achievements reveals distinct differences in their approaches and outcomes.

President Kennedy offered support for a civil rights bill, but faced intense southern resistance. Unfortunately, the bill stalled in Congress, and Kennedy’s assassination in 1963 left much of his civil rights agenda incomplete. Despite his intentions, he was somewhat reluctant to invest significant political capital to overcome the opposition.

On the other hand,

President Lyndon B. Johnson, ascending to the presidency following Kennedy's assassination, made remarkable strides by leveraging his political skills. Johnson successfully pushed through the stalled civil rights legislation and signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law. This act was considered a historic achievement, prohibiting discrimination in public accommodations, housing, and jobs based on race, religion, national origin, and gender. Johnson's understanding of Congressional politics and his relentless efforts were instrumental in achieving tangible civil rights reforms that Kennedy had struggled to realize.

A source of government revenue that pays for bridges, highways, police, and fire depts?

Answers

Answer:

In peacetime during America's early decades, most of the federal government's revenue came from import taxes called tariffs. The U.S. Congress passed the Tariff Act of 1789 to help generate revenue to pay off its war debts and to encourage and protect manufacturers in the northern states.

Explanation:

The three main sources of federal tax revenue are individual income taxes, payroll taxes, and corporate income taxes. Other sources of tax revenue include excise taxes, the estate tax, and other taxes and fees.

The chief way the government gets the money it spends is through taxation. Figure 1 shows the relative sizes of sources of federal government tax revenues. Forty-five percent of federal tax revenue comes from individuals' personal income taxes. Another 39 percent comes from Social Security and Medicare withholdings.

Government revenue sources for infrastructure and services include taxes, grants, borrowing, and service charges.

Government revenues to pay for bridges, highways, police, and fire departments predominantly come from various taxes such as income, property, and sales taxes. Additionally, government borrowing and grants from the federal government also contribute a significant portion of the revenue needed for these services.

For example, federal and state grants are critical for funding transportation infrastructure, housing, and community policing. Local governments also gain revenue through service charges, such as fees for hospital services, sewage, and waste management, and fines imposed through municipal courts.

Feralists believed in the separation of powers because they wanted

Answers

Answer:

Federalists believed in the separation of powers because they wanted individuals to have separate rights. All in regards to avoiding a recap of a constitutional monarchy were the rules didn't apply to the powerfuls.

Final answer:

The Federalists advocated for separation of powers to prevent corruption and ensure no single branch would have unchecked authority. This was inspired by Enlightenment thinkers and was essential in crafting a government that balanced efficiency with protection against tyranny, accomplished through distinct branches and checks and balances.

Explanation:

The Federalists believed in the principle of separation of powers as a core aspect of the United States Constitution because it provided a structural defense against the potential corruption and concentration of power. They drew inspiration from the philosophies of Montesquieu and other Enlightenment thinkers, who argued for a constitutional government that would prevent any single person or group from having total control. By separating the government into three branches (legislative, executive, and judicial), each with its own distinct powers and responsibilities, a balance would be struck that required cooperation to enact policy while also creating checks to ensure no single branch could dominate.

This structure not only increased the efficiency of the national government but also protected against tyranny and the degradation of various forms of government they feared, such as the transition from monarchy to tyranny or from aristocracy to oligarchy. The Constitution's framers also embedded a system of checks and balances within this separation, compelling the branches to work together, seen in actions such as the presidential veto or the Congressional power to override it. Beyond the federal level, power was further distributed across state and local levels, ensuring a multi-layered government structure to prevent the concentration of power and allowing various "laboratories" of democracy to emerge across the nation.

Federal Power vs. State Power was also a pivotal concern for the Founders, addressed through the framework of separation of powers and federalism, which allowed both national and state governments to have their unique spheres of authority. This complex division aimed to protect the rights of individuals and minority groups while still fostering an independent judiciary with the power of judicial review.

At the constitution convention delegates from northern to southern states disagree about

Answers

Answer:

Northern states and Southern states disagree about the Congress interference in slavery matters.

Explanation:

The Constitutional Convention was called " to render the constitution of the Federal Government adequate to the exigencies of the Union.", while Northern states were most abolitionists the Southern states still had slavery as main workforce and source of wealthy, but they did not pay taxes for it and did not want the Congress to end slaves trading. So many South states considered the slave as properties and wanted it to be protected and treated as such, while the North did not agree with that, as they saw slaves as person, so the delegates resolved this matter coming up with three-fifths clause, which would count slaves in the proportion of population for electing representatives and for matters of taxes.

Who Was the Best US President?

Answers

Final answer:

Exploring the best US President involves analyzing the legacies of key presidents like George Washington's foundational roles, Thomas Jefferson's foreign policy, Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act, Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, FDR's New Deal, Theodore Roosevelt's Monroe Doctrine enhancements, and Ronald Reagan's military spending.

Explanation:

Discussing the best US President requires exploring the impacts and legacies of several presidents throughout American history. For example, George Washington's legacy includes his pivotal role as a Founding Father, Framer, and first President, where his decisions helped lay the foundational structures of the United States government. Thomas Jefferson significantly crafted America's foreign policy, with the Louisiana Purchase and the Embargo Act as notable examples.

The controversial Indian Removal Act under Andrew Jackson displayed a character marked by prioritizing territorial expansion over the rights of indigenous peoples, a measure some argue reflects poorly on his presidency. Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 symbolizes a pivotal turning point in the Civil War, declaring the freedom of slaves in Confederate states and redefining the war's purpose.

FDR's New Deal had strengths such as providing immediate economic relief, implementing financial reforms, and inducing long-term industrial recovery. Theodore Roosevelt's enhancements to the Monroe Doctrine articulated a more assertive American foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere. Lastly, Ronald Reagan's increased military spending is often debated; advocates argue it helped end the Cold War, while critics emphasize the long-term economic costs and increased national debt.

Final answer:

Researching the best US President requires examining their impacts and legacies, from leadership qualities to policies implemented. Certain presidents like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, FDR, Theodore Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan each shaped the nation in significant ways. It is subjective and depends on historical interpretation and individual values.

Explanation:

Best US President

When researching who was the best US President, it's critical to examine the impacts and legacies of their presidencies on the country. Aspects such as leadership qualities, policies implemented, and the handling of critical circumstances are key factors in this evaluation. While the question is subjective and dependent on individual values and historical interpretation, here are some examples of influential Presidents and their legacies:

George Washington: Set precedents for the executive branch and maintained national unity.

Thomas Jefferson: Expanded US territory with the Louisiana Purchase and played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's foreign policy.

Abraham Lincoln: Emancipation Proclamation and preservation of the Union during the Civil War.

FDR (Franklin D. Roosevelt): Implemented the New Deal, helping to lead the country out of the Great Depression.

Theodore Roosevelt: Strengthened the Monroe Doctrine, effectively shaping American foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere.

Ronald Reagan: Increased military spending, which some argue led to the end of the Cold War.

Understanding the accomplishments and challenges faced by these Presidents can provide a framework for determining which President might be considered the 'best'. It is also important to discuss the broader impact of their actions on the country and the world.

Which of the following was a negative aspect of the Progressive Era?

Answers

Answer:

Although the Progressive Era was a period of broad reform movements and social progress, it also was characterized by loose, multiple, and contradictory goals that impeded the efforts of reformers and often pitted political leaders against one another, most drastically in the Republican Party.

Final answer:

The Progressive Era, although intended to bring about societal and democratic improvements, was characterized by several negative aspects. These include a significant decline in voter participation, particularly among women; detrimental effects in urban areas due to rapid industrialization; and a dismissive attitude of reformers, which, together with government intervention, exhausted the American public.

Explanation:

The Progressive Era had several notable negative aspects, despite its many well-intended reforms and ambitions for societal improvements. One of the major drawbacks was a decline in voter participation from both sexes during the 1920s, following the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. Many women, believing they had accomplished their primary objectives, withdrew from the movement, leading to a stalling of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

There were also harmful effects seen in urban areas due to rapid industrialization and congestion. Housing became overcrowded, particularly for immigrants and working-class individuals, and rooms often lacked fresh air and sunlight. This was coupled with widespread pollution, leading to outbreaks of cholera and tuberculosis, showing a lack of balance between economic growth and public welfare.

Moreover, the efforts towards democracy perfection and social justice also faced its regressions. Actions such as the restriction of political participation for those considered "unfit" and the arrogance of some reformers who overlooked the voices of those they purported to assist, undercut the successes achieved. Ultimately, the American public grew weary of an interventionist government, preferring to focus on their economic progress and personal lives.
