Excerpt from Energy from the Wind
Li Yung

3Wind is one of the oldest sources of energy. People have used the wind’s power since the beginning of recorded time. Over 5,000 years ago, ancient Egyptians used wind to sail ships on the Nile River. Later, people built windmills, thin buildings with spinning blades that are turned by the wind. When the wind turns the blades, the movement powers simple machines that can grind wheat, cut wood, or help with other tasks. For example, in the United States, people built thousands of windmills in the West that pumped water for farms and ranches.

4Today’s wind machines are a lot like the old-fashioned windmills. These machines, called turbines, use blades to collect the wind’s energy. Instead of using that energy for simple tasks, though, turbines turn the energy into electricity. Today’s wind machines are built on huge towers that are hollow and made of strong steel. The blades, called rotors, are made of tough, light materials called fiberglass and polyester. Here’s how the wind machine works. The wind pushes on the blades, making them turn. The turning blades spin a shaft that is connected to a generator, a machine that makes electricity. This electricity is then sent along wires to homes, businesses, and schools. It is used to power all sorts of tools and machines, from computers to can openers.

5Wind turbines are very striking and impressive to see. The most common type of turbine has blades like airplane propellers. Turbines stand twenty stories tall and have three blades that are each two hundred feet long. The largest wind turbine in the world, located in Hawaii, has blades that are longer than a football field!

6You may also see many wind turbines together in one area. People often build the turbines close together in a wind-power plant called a wind farm. A large wind farm may consist of a few dozen to about one hundred wind machines. One of the largest wind farms in the United States is in Altamont Pass, California. It has more than 900 wind turbines! Wind farms are built in flat, open areas where the wind blows at least twelve miles per hour.
If you were writing a research paper about wind turbines, which sentence from the passage would be irrelevant to your research?
A) The most common type of turbine has blades like airplane propellers.
B) Over 5,000 years ago, ancient Egyptians used wind to sail ships on the Nile River.
C) People often build the turbines close together in a wind-power plant called a wind farm.
D) Instead of using that energy for simple tasks, though, turbines turn the energy into electricity.

What connection does the author draw between sleep and simple tasks?

Answers

Final answer:

The author suggests that adequate sleep is crucial for maintaining cognitive functions that allow us to perform simple tasks efficiently, as it aids in memory formation and the consolidation of learning that can make such tasks automatic over time.

Explanation:

The author draws a connection between sleep and simple tasks by suggesting that sleep has a profound impact on cognitive functions that are essential for carrying out these tasks. Adequate sleep has been associated with benefits such as increased creative thinking, language learning, and the ability to make inferential judgments. Moreover, sleep is essential for effective memory formation and avoiding sleep deprivation, as it can lead to cognitive and memory deficits, impairing our abilities to perform simple tasks efficiently.

With respect to the simple tasks we do every day, like commuting or doing laundry, one may begin performing these tasks on 'autopilot' after a certain period, which indicates a certain level of learned automation. However, this learned efficiency is maintained and possibly enhanced by proper sleep, which supports learning and memory consolidation that underlies this automaticity. Hence, the quality and quantity of sleep we get may influence how effectively we can perform simple, everyday tasks that can become automatic with practice and learning.

Answers

Final answer:

The key-note metaphor in the first paragraph signifies the importance of understanding the setting of Coketown to fully appreciate the character of Mrs. Gradgrind in Charles Dickens's Hard Times. The soot and smog enveloping Coketown symbolize the overwhelming influence of industrialization.

Explanation:

The metaphor of the keynote in the first paragraph of the given text from Hard Times by Charles Dickens indicates chiefly that one needs to know more about Coketown to understand and appreciate Mrs. Gradgrind. This metaphor suggests that much like a keynote sets the tone for a musical piece, the setting of Coketown is significant to comprehending the context and characters within this novel. Coketown itself seems to embody the mechanistic and dehumanizing aspects of the Industrial Revolution, which likely influences the characters living within it, including Mrs. Gradgrind.

Generate a mental image of Coketown based on the description in the quote, one would expect to see a town cloaked in industrial smog, with streets littered with the residue of factory life, and a skyline dominated by towering chimneys belching out soot and smoke. The soot could symbolize the overshadowing and pervasive impact of industry on the lives of the town's inhabitants, clouding their existence much as it does the natural landscape.

Two stories that you have read in sections A and B of this unit use irony to deliver a message about isolation and alienation. Compare and contrast how Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" and Wharton's "A Journey" use similar characters, a plot twist, and a symbolic journey to convey the central idea that each man (or woman) struggles alone through life.

Answers

Both of these stories deliver a message about isolation and alienation. In "Young Goodman Brown," the protagonist feels misunderstood, confused and isolated when he finds out that his town, and more importantly, his wife, are not what he expected. On the other hand, in "A Journey," the woman is isolated in two different ways. She feels isolated due to the fact that she is a woman, and therefore, is somewhat outside of the public eye. Secondly, she is isolated because of the death of her husband.

The characters experience a crisis of identity when their social reality changes. In the case of Goodman Brown, he realizes that his town is not what it seems when he discovers everyone is impious, which is the plot twist. In "A Journey," the plot twist comes when the woman in the story realizes her husband is dead, but decides not to say anything. This also leads to an identity crisis as she considers what losing her husband means. Both of these stories ultimately show that the characters, as well as all of us, are ultimately alone.
