which best identifies a sentence fragment
1. Turning on the light, he suddenly got a shock
2. Maggie's photos were displayed in the lobby
3. Swept the floor first, then washed the dishes
4. In the first year, Julio won three ribbions
Option 3, 'Swept the floor first, then washed the dishes,' is the best example of a sentence fragment because it lacks a subject and does not express a complete thought on its own.
The best example of a sentence fragment among the provided options is number 3: 'Swept the floor first, then washed the dishes'. This group of words is missing a subject who is performing the actions, and though it contains verbs ('Swept' and 'washed'), it does not communicate a complete thought.
A sentence fragment is punctuated as if it were a complete sentence but lacks a main clause with a clear subject and predicate that expresses a complete thought. You can often fix a sentence fragment by adding the missing elements. For example, sentence 3 could be revised to 'He swept the floor first, then washed the dishes,' turning the fragment into a full sentence.
Abridged from Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe
My father, a wise and grave man, gave me serious and excellent counsel against what he foresaw was my design. He called me one morning into his chamber, where he was confined by the gout, and expostulated very warmly with me upon this subject. He asked me what reasons, more than a mere wandering inclination, I had for leaving father's house and my native country, where I might be well introduced, and had a prospect of raising my fortune by application and industry, with a life of ease and pleasure. He told me it was men of desperate fortunes on one hand, or of aspiring, superior fortunes on the other, who went abroad upon adventures, to rise by enterprise, and make themselves famous in undertakings of a nature out of the common road; that these things were all either too far above me or too far below me; that mine was the middle state, or what might be called the upper station of low life, which he had found, by long experience, was the best state in the world, the most suited to human happiness, not exposed to the miseries and hardships, the labour and sufferings of the mechanic part of mankind, and not embarrassed with the pride, luxury, ambition, and envy of the upper part of mankind.

Why is "good vs. evil" a universal theme?
The theme of 'good vs. evil' is universal due to its representation of the core moral challenges that resonate with human experiences and choices, often illustrated through characters and quests in stories and fables that probe our understanding of morality.
The “good vs. evil” motif is a universal theme because it embodies the fundamental moral struggle that is central to the human condition. This dichotomy plays out in stories worldwide with characters that are obviously good or evil, and sometimes neutral characters that represent the complexity of human morality. In many tales, the hero embarks on a quest, encountering various cultures and people – the Other – who have different beliefs and behaviors. The interaction with the Other can test the hero's moral compass and often highlights the relativity of good and evil. Throughout history, societies retell fables that incorporate this struggle, affirming shared values and passing on traditions.
Philosophers have debated whether good and evil are absolute terms or human constructs. Some view them as concrete realities with intrinsic power and danger, while others, like Leibniz, argue that they are humanly defined concepts that frame the perception of morality in the context of religion and the divine. However, whether viewed as independent forces or as part of a higher deity's plan, the struggle between good and evil continues to resonate because it reflects the challenges and choices every person faces.
How does the poet's use of alliteration influence the mood or tone of the passage?
1. "A powerful monster, living... growled in pain" (1-2)
2. "My tongue grows heavy... in this hall" (207-210)
3. "Herot trembled... across them" (293-300)
Beowulf!!
Alliteration is the repetion of a sound in two or more words in close succession. The effect it produces depends on the sound being repeated. In the first example a "p" sound is repeated: powerful, pain. This makes for a harsh tone, which follows the harshness of the action. The second example repeats an "h" sound: heavy, hall. It softens the mood. The last example is less clear. One could point to the t's in Herot, trembled, which give the verse a hard tone.
Which sentence in this excerpt from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” speech suggests that the US government would gain more power to prepare for war?
The Congress, of course, must rightly keep itself informed at all times of the progress of the program. However, there is certain information, as the Congress itself will readily recognize, which, in the interests of our own security and those of the nations that we are supporting, must of needs be kept in confidence.
New circumstances are constantly begetting new needs for our safety. I shall ask this Congress for greatly increased new appropriations and authorizations to carry on what we have begun.
I also ask this Congress for authority and for funds sufficient to manufacture additional munitions and war supplies of many kinds, to be turned over to those nations which are now in actual war with aggressor nations.
Our most useful and immediate role is to act as an arsenal for them as well as for ourselves. They do not need man power, but they do need billions of dollars worth of the weapons of defense.
The time is near when they will not be able to pay for them all in ready cash. We cannot, and we will not, tell them that they must surrender, merely because of present inability to pay for the weapons which we know they must have.
I do not recommend that we make them a loan of dollars with which to pay for these weapons—a loan to be repaid in dollars.

A newspaper publishes an article attacking an American politician, accusing him of taking bribes, blackmailing police officers, and spying on citizens. Which of the following, if true, would most likely indicate that the article was biased against the politician?
A. It was written by a person who saw the politician commit the crimes.
B. It was written by one of the politician's most bitter political enemies.
C. It was written by one of the politician's former college professors.
D. It was written by a journalist who supports her claims with photographs.
you're answer is B!
The second alternative is correct (B).
The main role of the media is to inform the population in an exempt way, so that each citizen draws his own conclusions. In this sense, if the article is published by a political enemy of the politician, the exemption is compromised. Although the fact is true, the politician can argue that he is being persecuted.

Choose an event from the play. Focus on the purpose it serves in the story. Consider how the story would change if that event was altered. Form your ideas into a paragraph of at least five sentences. Make sure to include supporting evidence from the play.
The weird sisters' predictions for Macbeth and Banquo
Macbeth's murder of Banquo
The appearance of Banquo's ghost at Macbeth's coronation dinner
Choose an event from the play:
The weird sisters' predictions for Macbeth and Banquo
Focus on the purpose it serves in the story:
The encounter of the witches with Macbeth is what kindles the conflict of the story. The fact that the weird sisters greet Macbeth as a king, sets in motion his desire to do whatever it takes to become the king. Apart from that, the prophecy about Banquo (his sons will be kings) will influence Mabeth's plans to try to murder him and his son. Therefore, the porpose of this event is to set in motion the main conflict of the story.
Consider how the story would change if that event was altered. Form your ideas into a paragraph of at least five sentences. Make sure to include supporting evidence from the play.
If the three weird sisters wouldn't have given any prophecy to Macbeth and Banquo, they would still be soldiers fighting for King Duncan until he dies, after that, maybe Macbeth could have been chosen as the king, since he was respected by the people of Scotland. In the second scene of Act 1, he is introduced as a very honorable soldier, if not the saviour of Scotland: "But all's too weak, for brave Macbeth -well he deserves that name-" (Act 1, Scene 2, Line 16). If Macbeth would have let things happen on its own, maybe he could have become the king without murdering the king himself.

But he was himself the chief horror of the scene, and shrank not from its other horrors." -- Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown
