Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

How does the speaker's metaphor of a gold star in paragraph 3 support the purpose of the speech?

A) It challenges the audience to view voluntourism opportunities in a positive light.
B) It confirms the idea that voluntourism experiences look good on a college or career resume.
C) It emphasizes the selfish and superficial motivation behind voluntour opportunities.
D) It highlights the generous contribution that voluntours make to the areas they visit.

Answers

Answer 1

It emphasizes the selfish and superficial motivation behind volunteer opportunities.

Answer: Option C.

Explanation:

There has been use of a metaphor "gold star" by the speaker in the speech in a particular paragraph. The use of that has been done to show the selfish purposes of some people who show that they are volunteers but they do it for their own good.

In that paragraph, the speaker says that the volunteers decide to open up and build a school. But the motive and the purpose behind this is not the good of others but for their own motive of having a gold star in their own resume which will help them in their professional career.

The dish tasted awfully good. Identify the literary device in this sentence

Answers

Answer:

oxymoron

-----------

The literary device in the sentence is an oxymoron, as it pairs contradictory terms "awfully" and "good." Oxymorons are used to create an effective description by combining opposites.

An oxymoron is used as a literary device in the statement "The dish tasted awfully good." A figure of speech that mixes terms that are contradictory is called an oxymoron. Because "good" has a positive connotation and "awfully" usually has a negative one, the phrase "awfully good" is paradoxical in this instance.

Another example of an oxymoron from the provided references involves phrases like "full stomachs pushed against their jeans," where the physical discomfort of being full contrasts with the pleasure of eating delicious food.

What theme is portrayed in this excerpt from Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich?

In reality it was just what is usually seen in the houses of people of moderate means who want to appear rich, and therefore succeed only in resembling others like themselves: there are damasks, dark wood, plants, rugs, and dull and polished bronzes—all the things people of a certain class have in order to resemble other people of that class. His house was so like the others that it would never have been noticed, but to him it all seemed to be quite exceptional. He was very happy when he met his family at the station and brought them to the newly furnished house all lit up, where a footman in a white tie opened the door into the hall decorated with plants, and when they went on into the drawing-room and the study uttering exclamations of delight. He conducted them everywhere, drank in their praises eagerly, and beamed with pleasure.

Passage (Things Fall Apart Excerpt #1)
Excerpt #1 from Things Fall Apart
Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his little children. Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness. It was deeper and more intimate than the fear of evil and capricious gods and of magic, the fear of the forest, and of the forces of nature, malevolent, red in tooth and claw. Okonkwo's fear was greater than these. It was not external but lay deep within himself. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father. Even as a little boy he had resented his father's failure and weakness, and even now he still remembered how he had suffered when a playmate had told him that his father was agbala. That was how Okonkwo first came to know that agbala was not only another name for a woman, it could also mean a man who had taken no title. And so Okonkwo was ruled by one passion - to hate everything that his father Unoka had loved. One of those things was gentleness and another was idleness.

A) She decided to talk to a fellow traveler.
B) She decided to keep her opinions to herself.
C) She knew a lady must keep her wits about her.
D) She wasn't fooled by the offer of conversation.

Answers

The phrase 'I put my bashfulness in my pocket' suggests overcoming shyness to engage in conversation, aligned with the option of choosing to talk to a fellow traveler.

When Alcott says she "put my bashfulness in my pocket", it can be interpreted that she decided to overcome her shyness and engage in an action that required her to be more outgoing or assertive than usual. This phrase suggests the act of temporarily setting aside one's shy nature to face a situation with more confidence. Option A, 'She decided to talk to a fellow traveler', would align with this understanding because it implies a decision to engage in conversation despite feelings of shyness or hesitation. Thus, talking to a fellow traveler would demonstrate putting one's bashfulness away like an object that can be stored and retrieved later.

Should there be a dress code at school? Why or why not?
Three reason

Answers

Benefits of a School Dress Code:

1) A dress code promotes a more serious school atmosphere which emphasizes academics and promotes good behavior.

2) Dress codes have proven to increase student achievement by encouraging students to concentrate more on their studies and less on their wardrobe. A de-emphasis on clothing can also save money, as there will be less pressure to keep up with expensive trends and fashions.

3) Dress codes in school settings reduce social conflict and peer pressure that may be associated with appearance.

4) Studies indicate that a school dress code can reduces the prevalence of certain behaviors which are often expressed through wardrobe such as violence or promiscuity.

5) As opposed to uniforms, dress codes still allow students to wear what they want which leaves students with a sense of choice and expression.

Hope this helps! ;)

Final answer:

Dress codes in schools can encourage professionalism, ensure equality by minimizing socioeconomic differences, and enhance safety by restricting inappropriate symbols. However, they may also restrict personal expression and reflect shifting cultural norms. The appropriateness of dress codes often depends on the specific cultural and institutional context.

Explanation:

The question of whether there should be a dress code at school is a complex one. Here are three reasons in support of a dress code:

Professionalism: Dress codes can instill a sense of professionalism and prepare students for workplace expectations. This mirrors the practice of dressing formally for a job interview versus casually for a party, indicating respect for the formality of the situation.

Equality: Uniforms or a strict dress code can reduce socioeconomic disparities by decreasing the visible differences in students' attire, promoting a more inclusive environment.

Safety: Dress codes can enhance safety by prohibiting clothing that displays inappropriate symbolism or that could incite discrimination, as evidenced by the case in Burleson High School, Texas, where Confederate flag imagery on purses was deemed to violate the dress code.

On the other hand, some argue that dress codes can restrict personal expression and may inadvertently perpetuate gender stereotypes. The evolving norms, such as the increasing acceptance of casual attire in educational settings in some cultures, reflect these concerns. Ultimately, whether dress codes are appropriate may depend on the cultural context and the values a particular educational institution wishes to uphold.

What is the Answer

Answers

Answer:

The energy conversion when a solar cell is used to light a street lamp is Option B: solar energy - electric energy - light and heat energy

Explanation:

From the 'Law of conservation' of energy, energy cannot be 'created' nor it can be destroyed. But we can convert energy from 'one form' to 'other'. The devices that transform energy from one form to another are called transducers.

'Solar cells' also known as  the photo voltaic cells. These devices transform light energy into electrical energy directly. When these solar cells are used in a street lamp, it will convert this electrical energy into heat and light energy.

Solar cells convert solar energy into electrical energy through the photovoltaic effect, which then powers street lamps to produce light and heat energy.

The correct answer to the question of which energy conversion takes place when a solar cell is used to light a street lamp is OB. solar energy - electric energy - light and heat energy. When sunlight, or solar energy, hits a photovoltaic cell, an energy transformation occurs. The photovoltaic effect within the solar cell converts solar energy directly into electrical energy. This electrical energy is then used to power the street lamp, producing light and some heat as byproducts of the lamp's operation.

2 One of the arguments the writer of the

Counterpoint essays makes is that Boyne's

clever wordplay is inappropriate. Identify what

the wordplay is and the experts' arguments. How

do the experts help the author support his claim?

Support your answer with textual evidence.

Answers

Final answer:

In general, wordplay is a way authors add wit or humor to their writing. Some experts may argue that this can be inappropriate or detract from serious subjects. They support their claim by referring to specific instances within the text where the wordplay seems to be in breach of the tone or severity of the situation.

Explanation:

Without access to the specific essay, I can offer a general definition and approach to the situation. Wordplay in literature refers to the clever and innovative use of language, often involving puns, wit, or other forms of language manipulation. The experts' arguments against the wordplay may suggest that it is inappropriate or detracts from the subject matter in some way. For example, they may argue that it risks trivializing serious topics or disrupting narrative flow.

Experts generally bolster an author's claim by providing outside evidence or corroboration. For instance, if a literary critic argues that Boyne's wordplay is inappropriate, they might support this claim by citing passages where the wordplay seems to offer humor in otherwise serious contexts, thereby underscoring their point.

#SPJ12

The correct interpretation of the question is that it asks for an identification of the wordplay used by John Boyne in his Counterpoint essays, the arguments made by experts regarding this wordplay, and how these experts' arguments support the author's claim.

In John Boyne's Counterpoint essays, the wordplay in question involves his use of the term Holocaust to refer to events other than the systematic persecution and extermination of Jews and other minority groups by the Nazi regime during World War II.

Boyne criticizes the use of the term Holocaust in contexts unrelated to the historical event, such as in discussions about animal rights or other tragedies. He argues that such usage dilutes the term and disrespects the memory of the victims of the actual Holocaust.

Experts weighing in on this issue typically argue that language is dynamic and that words can evolve to take on new meanings and applications over time. They may contend that the use of Holocaust in a broader sense can raise awareness about other instances of mass suffering and can serve as a powerful rhetorical tool to convey the gravity of those situations.

These experts help the author support his claim by providing a counterpoint to Boyne's argument. By presenting the perspective that wordplay and the evolution of language can be appropriate and even necessary for communication and understanding in a changing world, they highlight the complexity of the issue.

The author can then use these expert opinions to demonstrate the existence of a debate surrounding the appropriateness of such wordplay, thereby reinforcing the significance of his own stance on the matter.

To support this answer with textual evidence, one would need to reference specific passages from Boyne's essays and the responses from experts. For example, Boyne might argue that The Holocaust was a unique event in history and should not be compared to anything else, let alone used metaphorically (hypothetical quote).

In contrast, an expert might argue that Language adapts to the needs of its users, and the extension of the term 'Holocaust' can serve to highlight the severity of other human or animal tragedies (hypothetical expert opinion). By juxtaposing these viewpoints, the author can illustrate the tension between preserving the historical specificity of the term Holocaust and the natural evolution of language.

When you have a wide range of words at your disposal, you can choose the most appropriate ones to tailor your message to your audience, whether you're speaking or writing. Additionally, a diverse vocabulary enables you to comprehend and engage with various types of communication, including literature, academic texts, and professional documents.

Furthermore, having a purpose for your reading complements vocabulary building by enhancing your understanding and retention of new words. When you read with intent, whether it's to learn, gather information, or enjoy a story, you actively engage with the text, which can deepen your comprehension and expand your vocabulary in context. By associating words with specific meanings and contexts, you're more likely to remember them and incorporate them into your own communication.

While understanding phonetics can aid in pronunciation and articulation, and using symbols can sometimes facilitate communication, they are not as fundamental to developing strong communication skills as building your vocabulary and reading with purpose. Phonetics and symbols may be helpful in specific contexts or for specific purposes, but a robust vocabulary and purposeful reading are more universally applicable and impactful in improving overall communication abilities.

why was the country in such disarray before Merlin emerged

Answers

Answer:

The country was in such disarray because rivals battled in order to have the chance to be the next ruler when "Uther Pendragon" died.

Explanation:

Merlin is an important character in the legendary story about "King Arthur and his Excalibur." He was King Arthur's most trusted friend who was also a magician.

Uther Pendragon was a King of sub-Roman Britain. He's also considered as the father of King Arthur (through an illegitimate conception aided by Merlin). When he died, many battles emerged owing to the fact that they wanted to be crowned as the next ruler. The chaos was seen to have no end, unless a King would be crowned.

Merlin and the archbishop came to terms that whoever pulled the sword, which was known as "Excalibur," would be fit to be the King. Then came Arthur who pulled the sword and thus, he was dubbed as the next king. The king who placed an end to the chaos.
