Both petroleum and coal are made up of complex carbon-based molecules, and both originated with living creatures of some kind. Both are vital sources of energy for the modern world and both were formed by geologic processes over millions of years. However, petroleum was mainly formed from the remains of ocean-dwelling microorganisms. Coal, on the other hand, originated from decayed vegetation in ancient swamps and bogs. In any case, it took millions of years for both coal and oil to be produced. This is the case because it took that much time for overlying sediments to produce the unimaginable heat and pressure that would one day allow us to harvest these energy resources. What is an abstract concept?

Because they have no direct embodiment in the physical world, abstract ideas refer to things that are not limited by space or time. It exists as a type of item rather than at a specific moment or location. Emotions, analogies, and abstract behaviors are a few examples of abstract notions (e.g., thinking).

For instance, we can build a civilization based on abstract concepts like justice, equality, and freedom. These are ideas that exist in our brains but are detached from reality.

Being able to process complex visual or linguistic concepts that are difficult to relate to concrete concepts is known as abstract thinking. Compared to concrete thoughts, which are typically apparent and objective, abstract ideas are frequently invisible, complex, and subjective.

In "Exhalation," why had no other anatomist tried a brain dissection before the narrator's attempt?

Answers

Final answer:

The narrator in "Exhalation" was the first to attempt a brain dissection because there was limited knowledge of human anatomy from the past, and crude methods used previously only revealed major anatomical changes.

Explanation:

In the story "Exhalation", no other anatomist had attempted a brain dissection before the narrator's attempt due to the lack of prior knowledge and the complexity of the brain's anatomy. During the time frame of this narrative, rediscovering the body meant starting with a very base level of understanding, as there was little to no existing knowledge from antiquity on human anatomy to guide these explorations. Additionally, because the methods available to study the structure of the brain were crude and only allowed for observing major changes in gross anatomy, no fine or delicate structures within the brain had been explored in detail.

jim is interested in a career in web design. during his review he learns that a web designer will design edit and create web pages and needs to use new technology. which of the following post secondary options will best help him prepare for this career
A: Volunteering
B: Traveling the world
C: Vocational training
D: 2-year or 4-year college

Answers

Id go with D on this one

The correct option is C: Vocational training.

Vocational training is the most relevant post-secondary option for Jim, who is interested in a career in web design. This is because vocational training programs are specifically designed to provide practical skills and hands-on experience in a particular field, such as web design. These programs often focus on the latest technologies and software used in the industry, which are essential for designing, editing, and creating web pages.

Let's consider the other options:

A: Volunteering - While volunteering can provide valuable experience and looks good on a resume, it typically does not offer the structured learning environment that vocational training does, nor does it guarantee the development of the technical skills needed for web design.

B: Traveling the world - Traveling can broaden one's horizons and provide inspiration, but it does not directly contribute to the acquisition of the technical skills required for web design. It is more relevant for personal growth rather than professional skill development in this field.

D: 2-year or 4-year college - A college degree can be beneficial and is often required for many careers. However, for web design, a vocational training program can be more focused and efficient in teaching the necessary skills. Additionally, vocational training can be completed in a shorter time frame and often at a lower cost than a traditional college degree.

Therefore, vocational training is the best option for Jim to gain the specific skills and knowledge needed for a career in web design."

What does a topic state?

It makes the story more complex
I forces the character to change
States what the story is about

Answers

Final answer:

A topic statement in literature states what the story is about. It provides a focus and direction for the plot, characters, and conflicts in the story.

Explanation:

A topic statement in literature refers to the main idea or subject that the story is about. It provides a focus and direction for the plot, characters, and conflicts in the story. The topic statement states what the story is about and helps to develop the theme, which is the underlying message or lesson in the story. In essence, a well-crafted topic statement serves as the narrative compass, guiding the storytelling and shaping the reader's understanding of the central theme. It acts as a thematic anchor, providing cohesion and purpose to the literary work.

Final answer:

The topic of a story indicates what the story is about and serves as the subject matter for the plot. The theme, on the other hand, is the unifying message or idea conveyed through the story's plot, characters, and conflicts, offering insight into broader human experiences.

Explanation:

The topic of a story states what the story is about. It is the subject matter around which the plot revolves. A topic could be focused on an event, a situation, or a concept that the narrative aims to explore. For example, in a news story, the topic might be a natural disaster like a forest fire, and the focus might be on the implications of human negligence leading to such fires.

When analyzing literature, theme is a critical concept that goes hand-in-hand with the topic. The theme is a unifying idea or message conveyed through the story's plot points, conflicts, and characters. It's often a broad statement about humanity, life, or the universe expressed implicitly within the narrative. For instance, themes can deal with universal human experiences like love, death, or the struggle for identity.

A well-crafted story will have its characters and conflicts align with both the topic and the theme. Conflict is the force that drives the narrative and compels characters to change or face challenges, which in turn reflects on the thematic message of the story. Therefore, the topic specifies what is being discussed, while the theme dives deeper to explore the underlying messages or truths about the topic.

Read the excerpt from "The Most Dangerous Game."

"Where there are pistol shots, there are men. Where there are men, there is food," he thought. But what kind of men, he wondered, in so forbidding a place? An unbroken front of snarled and ragged jungle fringed the shore.

He saw no sign of a trail through the closely knit web of weeds and trees; it was easier to go along the shore, and Rainsford floundered along by the water. Not far from where he had landed, he stopped.

Some wounded thing, by the evidence a large animal, had thrashed about in the underbrush; the jungle weeds were crushed down and the moss was lacerated; one patch of weeds was stained crimson. A small, glittering object not far away caught Rainsford's eye and he picked it up. It was an empty cartridge.

Which details from the narration show that Rainsford is an experienced hunter and outdoor enthusiast? Check all that apply.

A. But what kind of men, he wondered, in so forbidding a place.

B. An unbroken front of snarled and ragged jungle fringed the shore.

C. Some wounded thing, by the evidence a large animal, had thrashed about in the underbrush;

D. the jungle weeds were crushed down and the moss was lacerated; one patch of weeds was stained crimson

Answers

Answer :

The following details from the narration show that Rainsford is an experienced hunter and outdoor enthusiast :

C. Some wounded thing, by the evidence a large animal, had thrashed about in the underbrush;

Rainsford's experienced eye could make out a wounded animal in the closely knit web of weeds and trees.

D. the jungle weeds were crushed down and the moss was lacerated; one patch of weeds was stained crimson

Rainsford noticed that some weeds were crushed down. This can only happen due to the weight of a wild wounded animal. He also noticed that the moss was torn at certain places and a patch of weeds was stained crimson from the blood of a hunted animal. Being an experienced hunter, Rainsford could pick up all these signs of a hunted prey.

E. A small, glittering object not far away caught Rainsford's eye and he picked it up. It was an empty cartridge.

Rainsford was a highly skilled and experienced hunter so he could not help but notice the empty cartridge lying near the wounded animal. He could easily recognize it from years of hunting experience.

Final answer:

The narration details showing Rainsford as an experienced hunter and outdoor enthusiast involve his ability to identify signs of an animal struggle (C and D) and his recognition of an empty cartridge (E), indicating his experience with hunting and firearms.

Explanation:

The details from the excerpt of "The Most Dangerous Game" that show Rainsford is an experienced hunter and outdoor enthusiast are those highlighting his observation skills and knowledge about hunting. Specifically, the following details demonstrate Rainsford's expertise:

C. Some wounded thing, by the evidence a large animal, had thrashed about in the underbrush; - This indicates Rainsford's ability to recognize signs of a recently wounded animal.D. the jungle weeds were crushed down and the moss was lacerated; one patch of weeds was stained crimson - These details suggest that Rainsford can interpret the signs of struggle and blood, which means he is familiar with tracking wounded animals.E. A small, glittering object not far away caught Rainsford's eye and he picked it up. It was an empty cartridge. - Picking up an empty cartridge and recognizing it indicates Rainsford's familiarity with firearms, a common tool for hunters.

Which mode of narration is used in this excerpt from Daisy Miller by Henry James?

The young lady inspected her flounces and smoothed her ribbons again; and Winterbourne presently risked an observation upon the beauty of the view. He was ceasing to be embarassed, for he had begun to perceive that she was not in the least embarrassed herself. There had not been the slightest alteration in her charming complexion; she was evidently neither offended nor flattered. If she looked another way when he spoke to her, and seemed not particularly to hear him, this was simply her habit, her manner.
Yet, as he talked a little more and pointed out some of the objects of interest in the view, with which she appeared quite unacquainted, she gradually gave him more of the benefit of her glance; and then he saw that this glance was perfectly direct and unshrinking. It was not, however, what would have been called an immodest glance, for the young girl's eyes were singularly honest and fresh. They were wonderfully pretty eyes; and, indeed, Winterbourne had not seen for a long time anything prettier than his fair countrywoman's various features—her complexion, her nose, her ears, her teeth. He had a great relish for feminine beauty; he was addicted to observing and analyzing it; and as regards this young lady's face he made several observations.

At first glance, it seemed to me that the two individuals were very different. But I took side notes and here's the two main things I noticed...

Similar- They both have the lust for adventure. Which is one of the reasons I connected to the characters and plots (of the story). Anyhow, once Eckels finds what he's been seeking he realizes it's too much for him.

Different-  One difference is that Walter never actually went on adventure, he just spent time fantasizing about it.

The narrator in 'All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace' expresses a desire to live in a utopian future where humans coexist harmoniously with intelligent machines in a nature-preserved ecosystem.

The narrator in the poem All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace does not express a mistrust of machines, an obsession with technology, or ambivalence about religion. Instead, the narrator reveals a desire to live in a utopian future where humans and intelligent machines coexist harmoniously and nature is preserved. The optimistic view of machines suggests that technology could lead to a more balanced ecosystem where machines care for human needs without dominating them, perhaps even watching over them lovingly as suggested by the title.

Richard Brautigan, the author, imagines a technological paradise where machines enable a return to a natural, yet technologically enhanced way of life. This vision reflects a certain era's hopes for the future, which stood in stark contrast to the more dystopian views presented by other authors of science fiction - where technology becomes a threat to humanity's very survival.

The poem's setting does not exhibit a fear of a Mechanical Planet or offer a critique like many science fiction narratives. Instead, it is infused with a cautious optimism about technology's ability to improve human existence and is reminiscent of utopian science fiction, which envisions a better world made possible by technological progress.

The excerpt evidences a shift in the children's habit from just passing by the sweet shop to intentionally stopping and gazing at it. Nonfiction usually employs headings and subheadings for clarity. The sentence uses the words 'it' and 'me' to denote a first-person point of view.

Explanation:

1. The answer is d. The first use of the verb indicates that the sweet-shop was on their way to school; the second use indicates that the children were obsessive about visiting the shop. The selected option illustrates a shift in usage of the verb 'passed' to describe the change in the behaviour of the children from just passing by the shop to stopping and gazing at the sweets.

2. The answer is a. A common feature of nonfiction is to include headings and subheadings. Unlike fiction, nonfiction tends to be more informative and structured, often using headings and subheadings for clarity and easier understanding of the content.

3. The answer is b. The group of words that signal the use of the first-person point of view in the sentence are 'it' and 'me'. This refers to the author's perspective and shows that the story or the situation is being narrated from the author's viewpoint.
