Chapter 1

"You know, hardly anyone ever needs to do a three-point turn anymore," said Justin, trying to help Becky calm down.

"Oh, so it's not a useful skill AND I am probably going to fail the driving test because I can't do it anyway," Becky said, raising her voice for emphasis. "That should make me feel like a million bucks when I flunk."

Justin was riding with Becky so she could take her driving test. He had volunteered for the job because he thought she would be less nervous with him than with their mom, but so far, he wasn't sure he was making any difference.

"Slow down, your turn is coming up here," he said, looking ahead.

"I know, I know," she replied, "I've been here before remember—the last time I flunked."

Justin was pretty sure if he had let her miss the turn, things would only have deteriorated further, but he wasn't sure he was fond of being the scapegoat for Becky's anxiety.

"Listen, you need to take a few deep breaths," he said, hoping he could help her at least relax a bit. "Being nervous won't help you with the three-point turn or anything else you have to do. Hey, did you just take that turn without your turn signal on?" This was going to be harder than he thought.

"Stop yelling at me," Becky replied, clearly frustrated, "I can't concentrate."

"Look, you need to stop and get yourself together here," Justin started. "It is not just about passing the driving test. I don't want to get in an accident, so pull into that parking lot."

Becky drove into the office building's parking lot where Justin was pointing. Justin knew they were less than a mile from the licensing office, and if she continued in this condition, he'd be having this same discussion three months from now when she tried the test again for the third time.

"You need to get a grip," he started after she put the car in park, "because you have studied and practiced driving all year. You know this stuff inside and out, backwards and forwards. What are you so nervous about?"

"I don't know, I don't know," Becky wailed, resting her head on the steering wheel. "I just get so tired of failing."

Listening quietly as Becky sobbed, Justin realized this was about much more than a driving test. He also knew if he didn't find a way to help Becky things would just get worse.

Chapter 2

Justin took a deep breath and collected his thoughts. Becky was an unbelievably consistent straight-A student. It was Justin who got the bad grades in school, and Justin who had to repeat every math class he'd ever taken. It was Justin who wished he could get the grades Becky got. Some things came easier for Justin: He was athletic, handy with tools, and good at making the best of whatever life threw at him. Mom called him her "lemons into lemonade" kid. But for the most part, Becky succeeded easily, whereas Justin had to work and work to just get a passing grade.

Rather than having Becky catalogue all the things she supposedly "failed" at, Justin decided to try an alternative approach, one that wouldn't remind him of all the ways he had failed.

"Okay, Becky, let's assume for a moment you fail this test again. What is the worst thing that could happen?" he asked.

"I would be the oldest kid at school without a license and be humiliated," she replied. Justin thought he heard a bit of panic in her voice but continued with his plan.

"Yes, but won't we still have to drive to school together for at least one more year anyway?" he asked.

"Yes, but..." she started.

"And who will know, if you don't tell anyone except your friends, that you don't have your license? You know Mom can't afford another car just for you, right?"

"Yes," she said quietly.

"So what difference does it make, really," he said. "Another three months to wait in the grand scheme of your life doesn't seem like all that long, right?"

"I suppose not," she said.

Justin could tell she was breathing more slowly now. "Besides," he said, "I would miss all the practice driving with you," and for good measure he reached over and pinched her arm.

"Ow," she said, hitting back at him, "that hurt."

"So let's go do this, okay?

"Okay," she said. Becky cranked up the car, backed slowly out of the parking spot and drove up to the parking lot's exit. Justin noticed, as they waited for the traffic to clear, that she had remembered the turn signal.

Excerpt from Beauty IS a Beast D. M. Larson FAIRY: Now how is this story supposed to start. Let's see, Oh, yes. Once upon a time there was a princess named Beauty who was lovelier than anyone else in the entire kingdom. But wait, that's not really when the story started. It really started long ago, in a land far, far away, when Beauty was just a baby. Perhaps I should start by saying twice upon a time. Anyway, There was a royal family, the royal family of Callentine who had brought peace to their kingdom and led everyone out of the Dark Ages, by inventing the light bulb. Just kidding. They were kind and fair rulers who did what was best for the people. As a reward for their good deeds, I decided to make their newborn daughter the most beautiful person in the world. But as you will soon see, making Beauty that way was a big mistake. What is the best summary of the fairy's monologue?

Answers

Answer:

The narrator created a baby named beauty and soon finds out that doing so was a mistake.

The best summary of the fairy's monologue is that the fairy is introducing the story of a princess named Beauty, who was the most beautiful person in the world due to the fairy's gift.

However, the fairy hints that this gift may have been a mistake. The story of Beauty does not start with her as a princess but rather as a baby in the royal family of Callentine, a family known for their kind and fair rule, which brought peace to their kingdom. The fairy playfully suggests that the story's true beginning is not the typical once upon a time but rather twice upon a time, indicating a different take on the classic fairy tale opening.  The monologue begins with the fairy questioning the conventional start of fairy tales, Once upon a time, and instead suggests that the true beginning of this story is different, hence the playful use of twice upon a time.

Answers

Answer:

Dactylic meter

Explanation:

It is stressed, unstressed, and unstressed which is the dactylic meter.

To determine the meter of the poem, we would analyze the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. However, without a full poem or author intent, identifying a singular meter from the provided excerpts is challenging. Meter types like iambic pentameter and trochaic octameter, as well as free verse, could be present, but it would only be an assumption.

To determine the meter of the provided poem excerpts, one must analyze the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in each line. Meter is not mentioned explicitly in the provided verses; however, generally speaking, meters like iambic pentameter (a line of five iambs, each consisting of an unstressed followed by a stressed syllable), trochaic octameter (a line of eight trochees, with each trochee consisting of a stressed followed by an unstressed syllable), and variations thereof are common in English poetry. For instance, Shakespeare's 'Sonnet 18' begins with the line 'Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?' and is written in iambic pentameter.

Addressing this student's question, without a consistent pattern to define the lines shown in the excerpts, it's challenging to identify a singular meter. Based on a traditional understanding of meter, lines arrangement such as iambic pentameter or trochaic octameter, could be considered, but it would be an educated guess unless we examine the full poem or know the poet's intent. It is possible that the poem uses a mixture of metrical patterns or is written in free verse, which does not follow a regular metric or rhythmic pattern.

To better understand the concept of meter and its variations, it is advised to consult resources such as Poets.org, which offers comprehensive information on different types of meter and how they contribute to the rhythm and sound of poetry.

Iran also faces ongoing political challenges related to its nuclear ambitions and relations with Israel, and internal societal changes.

Explanation:

As of the knowledge cutoff in 2023, Iran is not officially at war with any country. However, Iran has been involved in various regional conflicts and political challenges. Notably, Iran faced a serious conflict with Iraq known as the Iran-Iraq War from 1980 to 1988. This war was a result of disputes over the Shatt al-Arab waterway and was fueled by ethnic and religious differences, with Iran being predominantly Persian and Shia Muslim, while Iraq's leadership under Saddam Hussein was Arab and Sunni Muslim.

Political challenges for Iran include issues such as the country's pursuit of nuclear capabilities and the tension it has with the State of Israel, which Iran's government does not recognize. Iran was also labeled part of the 'Axis of Evil' by former US President George W. Bush due to concerns over its nuclear ambitions and human rights record. Moreover, Iran has encountered internal conflicts between conservative Islamic fundamentalists and reformist factions seeking more openness and democratic freedoms, indicating a complex socio-political landscape within the country.

In God’s grandeur, God is ubiquitous and omnipotent?

Answers

In God’s grandeur God is ubiquitous and omnipotent

Final answer:

God is traditionally described as omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent, but philosophical discourse and beliefs such as panentheism challenge this classical understanding. God's relationship with a changing universe and the existence of evil lead to the Problem of Evil. The concept of a maximally great being posits that if God exists in any possible world, He exists in all of them.

Explanation:

In the context of various religious and philosophical beliefs, the nature of God is often described with the attributes of being omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), and omnibenevolent (all-good). Beliefs around these attributes and the existence of evil pose what is known as the Problem of Evil, challenging the consistency of God's attributes. Philosophical arguments, such as those from Descartes and in discussions of a maximally great being, suggest that if God is perfect in every possible world, His existence is necessary and actual across all possible worlds.

Panentheism articulates a view where God includes and interpenetrates the universe, yet is not identical to it, which allows for the universe's changes to affect God while maintaining God's eternal abstract qualities. This view contrasts with classical theism, where God is entirely immutable. These various approaches and the idea that reality consists of serially-ordered events brought about by agents of free will rather than static material substances challenge traditional understandings of omnipotence and divine perfection.

Final answer:

The correct answer is C, which highlights the transmission of Kiowa traditional prayer methods from generation to generation, embodying the enduring nature of Native American cultural practices despite historical challenges.

Explanation:

The aspect of the excerpt from The Way to Rainy Mountain that best exemplifies how American Indian culture and themes can be passed down and changed over time is:

C. Momaday watching and evaluating his grandmother praying in the traditional Kiowa manner.

This choice represents the continuity and adaptation of cultural and religious practices within Native American communities. Despite external efforts to suppress such traditions, as seen with the Kiowa Sun Dance and other cultural aspects, the resilience and adaptation of these practices demonstrate the ability of cultures to persevere and evolve over generations.

The persistence of the Sun Dance ritual, even after being driven underground due to government and missionary opposition, showcases a strong commitment to cultural inheritance and the communal effort to retain sacred ceremonies. Further, examples of elders teaching younger generations the ways of the Sun Dance indicate not only the preservation but also the potential modernization and resurgence of these traditions within Native American societies.
