Some versions of the play have “sullied" instead of “solid.” How
does that change alter the focus of Hamlet's disgust?
Answer: Shakespeare's soliloquies give the reader, or the audience, the opportunity to witness what is going on in a character's mind. While these soliloquies are, of course, spoken by the characters, they offer the reader some insight into Shakespeare's concerns about the human condition.
Explanation:
The word 'sullied' indicates a shift in Hamlet's disgust from the physical to the moral, suggesting he yearns for a cleansing from moral defilement rather than an escape from physical life.
Explanation:In the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the words 'sullied' and 'solid' carry significantly different connotations. When Hamlet refers to his 'solid flesh,' it implies a focus on the physical, tangible aspect of life, expressing Hamlet's desire for his physical form to melt or dissolve to escape his worldly troubles. On the other hand, if we replace 'solid' with 'sullied', it changes the nature of Hamlet's inner conflict. The term 'sullied' refers to being stained, tarnished, or morally impure. Instead of focusing on his physical existence, Hamlet's disgust would be aimed at his moral or spiritual corruption. In this context, Hamlet wishes not for an escape from physical life, but rather, for a cleansing from moral defilement. Therefore, the choice between 'sullied' and 'solid' drastically alters the focal point of Hamlet's conflict and needs to be interpreted accordingly.
