Answer 1

Answer:

The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 was the first measure passed by the U.S. Congress to prohibit trusts. It was named for Senator John Sherman of Ohio, who was a chairman of the Senate finance committee and the Secretary of the Treasury under President Hayes. Several states had passed similar laws, but they were limited to intrastate businesses. The Sherman Antitrust Act was based on the constitutional power of Congress to regulate interstate commerce. (For more background, see previous milestone documents: the Constitution, Gibbons v. Ogden, and the Interstate Commerce Act.) The Sherman Anti-Trust Act passed the Senate by a vote of 51–1 on April 8, 1890, and the House by a unanimous vote of 242–0 on June 20, 1890. President Benjamin Harrison signed the bill into law on July 2, 1890.

A trust was an arrangement by which stockholders in several companies transferred their shares to a single set of trustees. In exchange, the stockholders received a certificate entitling them to a specified share of the consolidated earnings of the jointly managed companies. The trusts came to dominate a number of major industries, destroying competition. For example, on January 2, 1882, the Standard Oil Trust was formed. Attorney Samuel Dodd of Standard Oil first had the idea of a trust. A board of trustees was set up, and all the Standard properties were placed in its hands. Every stockholder received 20 trust certificates for each share of Standard Oil stock. All the profits of the component companies were sent to the nine trustees, who determined the dividends. The nine trustees elected the directors and officers of all the component companies. This allowed the Standard Oil to function as a monopoly since the nine trustees ran all the component companies.

The Sherman Act authorized the Federal Government to institute proceedings against trusts in order to dissolve them. Any combination “in the form of trust or otherwise that was in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations” was declared illegal. Persons forming such combinations were subject to fines of $5,000 and a year in jail. Individuals and companies suffering losses because of trusts were permitted to sue in Federal court for triple damages. The Sherman Act was designed to restore competition but was loosely worded and failed to define such critical terms as “trust,” “combination,” “conspiracy,” and “monopoly.” Five years later, the Supreme Court dismantled the Sherman Act in United States v. E. C. Knight Company (1895). The Court ruled that the American Sugar Refining Company, one of the other defendants in the case, had not violated the law even though the company controlled about 98 percent of all sugar refining in the United States. The Court opinion reasoned that the company’s control of manufacture did not constitute a control of trade.

The Court’s ruling in E. C. Knight seemed to end any government regulation of trusts. In spite of this, during President Theodore Roosevelt’s “trust busting” campaigns at the turn of the century, the Sherman Act was used with considerable success. In 1904 the Court upheld the government’s suit to dissolve the Northern Securities Company in State of Minnesota v. Northern Securities Company. By 1911, President Taft had used the act against the Standard Oil Company and the American Tobacco Company. In the late 1990s, in another effort to ensure a competitive free market system, the Federal Government used the Sherman Act, then over 100 years old, against the giant Microsoft computer software company.

Answers

Answer:

Polaris will no longer be due north because of Earth's precession.

Explanation:

When a rotating body experiences a change in its rotational axis, it is referred to as Precession.

Due to the precession or rotation of the earth, Polaris, the Pole Star will not be due north, this will cause the inhabitants to lose their way.

Final answer:

The situation is incorrect due to the precession of Earth's axis. By 14,000 A.D., Polaris will no longer be the North Star, Vega will be.

Explanation:

The given scenario is incorrect because of the precession of the Earth's axis over time. The Earth's axis wobbles, or precesses, in a cycle that takes approximately 26,000 years. As a result of this precession, Polaris will not always be the North Star. In fact, by the year 14,000 A.D., the star Vega will be closer to the north celestial pole than Polaris. Based on historical records, it is clear that Columbus's patrons were most excited by the potential extraction of gold and other valuables from the lands he discovered (option b). Queen Isabella of Castile showed great interest in the gains for God and Castile, promising Columbus a title of nobility and ten percent of the riches obtained. The Spanish monarchs were engaged in a competitive race against Portugal to find an all-water route to the Indies and understood the commercial advantages to be found in new trade routes and the expansion of Christianity. which nation was indisputably the allies primary opponent by 1917

Answers

Answer:

Germany

Explanation:

Final answer:

Germany was indisputably the main opponent of the Allies by 1917 due to its aggressive submarine warfare and America's subsequent entry into World War I, bolstering the Allied forces against the Central Powers.

Explanation:

The nation that was indisputably the Allies' primary opponent by 1917 during World War I was Germany. This period marked a shift in the war dynamics due to several pivotal events. Firstly, the unrestricted submarine warfare initiated by Germany, especially the sinking of vessels like the Lusitania, which carried American civilians, outraged public opinion and led to the United States declaring war on Germany in April 1917. Secondly, the Allies were struggling on the Western Front, and the arrival of the American troops in the summer of 1917 provided a much-needed boost to the Allied forces. Thirdly, Germany and the Central Powers faced a daunting challenge due to the increasing military and economic might of the Allies, which eventually led to a numerical disadvantage on the battlefield. The combination of America's entrance into the war and Germany's aggressive tactics made it clear that Germany was the primary focus of the Allied efforts.

One of the first anthropologists to provide a definition of culture as "that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, law, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society

Answers

Answer:

one of the first anthropologists to provide a definition of culture as a complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society was Edward Burnett Tylor.

Explanation:

Sir Edward Burnett Tylor was an English anthropologist, the founder of cultural anthropology. Tylor's ideas typify 19th-century cultural evolutionism. In his works Primitive Culture and Anthropology.

The first anthropological definition of culture comes from 19th-century British anthropologist Edward Burnett Tylor: he defined Culture as a complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.

Final answer:

Culture, as defined by nineteenth-century British anthropologist Edward Burnett Tylor, is a complex whole that includes everything learned and shared within a society. Cultural anthropology studies these aspects, focusing on traditions, beliefs, customs, and other societal components to understand human societies comprehensively. The term culture extends beyond sophistication, encompassing the social fabric of human existence and identity.

Explanation:Definition of Culture in Anthropology

The concept of culture in anthropology is broad and encompasses nearly all aspects of human life. The term was defined comprehensively by nineteenth-century British anthropologist Edward Burnett Tylor. According to Tylor, culture is “that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.” This definition implies that culture encompasses both tangible and intangible aspects of human societies, from the arts and laws to social norms and values. Furthermore, culture is learned and transmitted within a society through the process known as enculturation, which is essential for individual identity formation and the continuation of societal traditions and beliefs.

The understanding of culture extends beyond mere refinement or sophistication often associated with being 'cultured.' Instead, it is recognized as a vital human characteristic that is both inclusive and diverse. Culture is an integral part of every human society, and thus, the study and analysis of culture are pivotal in the field of cultural anthropology. This area of study seeks to understand the complexities of human societies by examining their various cultural attributes and practices.

Edward B. Tylor's Influence on Anthropological Concept of Culture

Edward B. Tylor's expansive definition has been significant in shaping anthropological discourse. It has allowed for an understanding of culture that includes all aspects of human behavior and societal organization. The concept of culture, as defined by Tylor, suggests that every human experience and activity could be considered part of a broader cultural context. This all-encompassing view provides a framework for anthropologists to study the wide range of human activities and the meanings that societies attach to them.

While Tylor's definition laid the foundation for cultural anthropology, further anthropologists such as Franz Boas and his students expanded upon this by emphasizing the importance of cultural relativeness and the holistic study of a society’s context, including its history and the role of enculturation. Cultural anthropology thus became a discipline seeking to comprehensively understand human experience within the parameters of culture.

The English editor W. T. Stead accurately predicted in 1902 that the United States would increasingly get involved in the affairs of other countries in order to strengthen its influence—both cultural and political—around the globe.

Answers

Answer:

It's TRUE

Explanation:

W.T. Stead looked at the American development after the Civil War and began to realize, before everyone else, that the United States would be, in the subsequent few years, influence economical and political power. Most important, however, Stead looked at the American internal politics and understood that, soon or later, in order to protect their benefits and interests, America would influence and interfere in other countries.

Final answer:

U.S.'s shifting foreign policy from isolationism to engagement, the intended decrease in foreign involvement by Woodrow Wilson, and the advocacy for empire expansion by 1890s leaders contributed to U.S.'s increased global involvement, aligning with W.T Stead's prediction.

Explanation:

The prediction by the English editor W. T. Stead claims the increasing global involvement of the United States due to its desire to strengthen its political and cultural influence. This development traces back to several historical events. The rise of United States as a global power began under the presidency of Taft, shifting from isolationism to engagement in international politics following the realities of the post-World War II era. In addition, the country began to exert cultural influence, largely due to its global dominance after World War II, by exposing host countries to American traditions, sports, and norms.

Woodrow Wilson intended to decrease U.S. involvement in foreign affairs, believing that the nation only needed to intervene when morally necessary. However, he had to accept the country's growing responsibility in international events as the political situation in Europe worsened. Furthermore, leaders emerging in the 1890s, eager to prove America's global prowess and expand its influence, led to a revitalized foreign policy advocating for empire expansion.
