Read the passage and study the image from Sugar Changed the World.

The owner of a sugar plantation built a home—called the Great House—usually high on a hill, where the tropical breezes blow. The open windows provided a kind of air conditioning, making even the hottest days more pleasant. These grand homes, with their high, cool rooms, their polished mahogany furniture, and their servants flitting between the main house and the separate cooking building, were meant to command attention, to show power and wealth. A plantation owner was a kind of god or king, ruling over his empire of sugar.

In the Great House the owners could sit on the verandahs, rest their legs on special chairs made for pulling off high rubber boots, drink their rum swizzlers, while their slaves labored on hundreds and hundreds of acres of cane fields. The furniture was imported from abroad, along with all the other comforts—silverware, silk-covered chairs, white christening gowns, porcelain washing bowls.

To this day, you can find the Great Houses of old plantations on hilltops throughout the Caribbean, and yet the strange thing is that the men who built and owned the homes hardly used them. For as soon as a sugar planter made enough money, he took his family and moved back to Europe. You can find the planters in the great English novels of the 1800s, such as Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, settled into their English homes and watching, through their account books, how the sugar crop was doing back in the Caribbean. While the masters enjoyed the life of wealth in Europe, the daily routine of the plantations was left in the hands of the overseers. Most often poor men who came to the New World to make their fortunes, the overseers had not the slightest sympathy for their enslaved workers.

The effectiveness of a network is related to the configurations and the way that network is being used. The size of the network has no influence on its effectiveness, but small networks are easier to maintain, manage and configure, because it is easier to maintain communication between network members.

False

Explanation:

The main purpose of a network is to cover a large area so that it can interconnect as many elements as possible. Therefore, the larger a network is, the more effective it is. For example, if you are networking for employment purposes, you are more likely to get good results if your network involves a large number of people. Read the excerpt from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock."

The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes,
The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains,
Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys,
Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap,
And seeing that it was a soft October night,
Curled once about the house, and fell asleep.

Based on the excerpt, how does the narrator feel about the evening fog?
He believes it is soft and beautiful.
He believes it is stealthy and all-encompassing.
He believes it is intrusive and deceitful.
He believes it is powerful and overwhelming.

Answers

Answer:

He believes it is stealthy and all-encompassing.

Explanation:

Based on the excerpt, the narrator feels that the evening fog is stealthy and all-encompassing. The right answer is B.

The use of descriptive language like "rubbing," "licked its tongue," "lingered," and "curled once about the house" suggests that the fog is creeping and surrounding everything, creating a sense of stealthiness and pervasiveness. The fog's behavior in the passage indicates that it is not perceived as soft and beautiful, intrusive and deceitful, or powerful and overwhelming, but rather as an all-encompassing and subtle presence.

The fog's actions of rubbing its back on the window-panes and slipping by the terrace also reinforce its stealthy and almost secretive nature. The narrator's use of vivid imagery and personification paints the fog as a mysterious and silent presence, adding to the sense of its all-encompassing and subtle qualities.

When A Vindication of the Rights of Woman was first published, it caused great public outcry, not only because of its content but also because of its straightforward, blunt style. In those days, people were not accustomed to women’s speaking their minds. Write an essay that defines Wollstonecraft’s style. Do you think her style would be considered blunt by today’s standards?

Answers

Final answer:

Mary Wollstonecraft's style in 'A Vindication of the Rights of Woman' was remarkably direct and unapologetically blunt for its time, blending philosophical arguments with personal appeals. Today, while it may not seem as radical, its forthrightness and rationality continue to resonate with modern audiences.

Explanation:

Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is renowned for its stirringly direct and uncompromising style, which, for its time, was unapologetically blunt and straightforward. This was considered quite revolutionary during an era when the concept of women’s voices in public discourse was an anathema. Wollstonecraft’s style was philosophical yet accessible, filled with rational arguments yet emotional appeals, and she did not shy away from discussing topics that were considered taboo, like women's bodies or their roles in society.

When contrasting the perceived bluntness of Wollstonecraft’s style with today's standards, it may not seem quite as radical. The social acceptability of direct discourse, particularly regarding feminist theory and egalitarian views, is much more pronounced now. Nevertheless, Wollstonecraft's forthright style resonates in the modern context as an early example of feminist discourse that sought to rigorously challenge existing social norms and argue for equality based on reason.

Final answer:

Walt Whitman's poetry is marked by an appreciation for democracy and individualism, revealed through joyous expressions of the American spirit and the distinctive voices of its people. His work, like 'I Hear America Singing,' uses unconventional structure to represent each person's unique contribution to the nation.

Explanation:

Understanding Walt Whitman's Poetry

Walt Whitman's poetry, such as I Hear America Singing, reflects his democratic and individualistic ideals by celebrating the uniqueness and contribution of every American, no matter their profession. The term "carols" instead of "songs" suggests a joyous and spontaneous quality to the voices he describes, enhancing the poem's celebratory mood. The structure of Whitman's poetry, often seen as unconventional for its time due to the lack of rhyme and strict meter, mirrors the poet's belief in natural expression and the significance of the individual.

Concepts in Whitman's Poetry

The use of the word "carols" conveys a sense of communal joy and individuality.Democracy and individualism are central themes, demonstrated by the inclusion of numerous professions and the idea that everyone has a unique song to sing. The mood of the poem is celebratory, capturing the spirit of American optimism and self-reliance.

Furthermore, Whitman's background as a journalist, editor, and lover of the common people, as well as his experiences living in urban centers, heavily influenced his poetry. This is displayed in Leaves of Grass, where Whitman's celebration of the common and the grand reflects the growing modernization of the nation and his role as the champion of American identity.
