Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) arises in the bone marrow affecting the myeloid lineage and is characterized by the Philadelphia chromosome, resulting in the production of an abnormal enzyme that causes unregulated cell growth.
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a type of blood cancer that originates from a bone marrow stem cell. This stem cell is responsible for creating all types of blood cells, but CML primarily affects the myeloid lineage which produces granulocytes and macrophages. During the early or chronic phase of CML, there may be moderately elevated numbers of leukemic cells without severe symptoms.
However, the disease can progress to an accelerated phase and eventually lead to a "blast crisis." During the blast crisis, there is a significant increase in the leukemic granulocyte-macrophage progenitors, and these cells lose the ability to differentiate properly.
