Answers

Answer 1

Nope, usually a flower

Answer 2

Answer: Goddess Demeter's symbol is a TORCH

Explanation: Demeter is the goddess of the harvest and presides over grains and the fertility of the earth. Although she was most often referred to as the goddess of harvest, she was also goddess of sacred law and the cycle of life and death. ------> Demeter is shown carrying her torch symbolizing her eternal vigilance. She is often depicted with a serpent around each arm, holding three ears' of corn. She is carrying fruits of the harvest as a symbol of wealth and fertility and abundance of the earth.

Yup, so the correct answer is: torch neither flower nor spear. It talks all about her symbols and what she stands for.

In De Maupassant's story, "The Necklace," how does the symbolism of the necklace help convey the
deeper theme of the text? Write in full sentences, and embed direct evidence to back up your claim

Answers

Answer:

The main theme of "The Necklace" a contrast between greed and generosity. Madame Loisel, the protagonist, lives a modest, yet comfortable middle class life with her husband. However, she feels that her lack of luxury is a very great injustice. Her life is comfortable enough to afford one servant, but she wishes for several. She has plenty of food, but she dreams of "delicate meals." Her husband can barely afford to buy her a ball gown, but she insists on having jewelry to go with it. When she first sees her friend's diamond necklace, "her heart [beats] covetously." Her greed stands in marked contrast to the generosity of her husband and Madame Forestier.

The necklace itself represents the theme of appearances versus reality. While sufficiently beautiful to make Madame Loisel feel comfortable during the ministerial ball, the necklace is actually nothing more than paste and gilt. Thus, it is not the reality of wealth or high social class that is important for Madame Loisel, just the appearance of it.

Chapter I

At A Nation's Crisis

By 1860, then, war was inevitable. Naturally, the conflict would at once present intricate military problems, and among them the retention of the Pacific Coast was of the deepest concern to the Union. Situated at a distance of nearly two thousand miles from the Missouri River which was then the nation's western frontier, this intervening space comprised trackless plains, almost impenetrable ranges of snow-capped mountains, and parched alkali deserts. And besides these barriers of nature which lay between the West coast and the settled eastern half of the country, there were many fierce tribes of savages who were usually on the alert to oppose the movements of the white race through their dominions.

Which statements about Friar Laurence's soliloquy are true
1) Fiar Laurence provides advices for cooking with herbs.
2)Fiar Laurence contrasts that good and bad uses of herbs.
3) Fiar Laurence explains to audience his use for herbs.
4) Fiar Laurence describes to audience his role as Fiar

Answers

He basically talks about the good things he can do with the herbs so I’d say the correct answer is 1

Friar Laurence's soliloquy in 'Romeo and Juliet' contrasts the good and bad uses of herbs and explains his use of them. He does not provide cooking advice or describe his role as a Friar. Therefore, Statements 2 and 3 are true, while Statements 1 and 4 are false.

In Friar Laurence's soliloquy in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, he does not provide advice on cooking with herbs (Statement 1 is false). Instead, he contrasts the good and bad uses of herbs, reflecting on how everything in nature has both positive and negative potentials. Therefore, Statement 2 is true. He also does explain his use for herbs to some extent, emphasizing their medicinal properties and their dual nature, so Statement 3 could be seen as true. However, he doesn't describe his role as a Friar in this soliloquy, making Statement 4 false.

Statement 1 - False: Friar Laurence does not give advice on cooking with herbs.

Statement 2 - True: He contrasts the good and bad uses of herbs.

Statement 3 - True: He explains to some extent his use of herbs.

Statement 4 - False: He does not describe his role as a Friar in the soliloquy.

Which sentence is an example of a concrete statement ?

Answers

Answer:

B

Explanation:

Answer: The sentence that is an example of a concrete statement is B. "I have four years of experience using both the Falcon X and LionCoat software systems".

Explanation: A concrete sentence is a sentence that provides information that is clear and certain. Moreover, concrete sentences are based on evidence; therefore, examples are generally included in them. The only sentence among the options that can be described as concrete is B. ("I have four years of experience using both the Falcon X and LionCoat software systems") since it is a statement that refers to an actual experience, that is specific (especially when the word "four" is used to make reference to the years of experience) and that gives examples ("the Falcon X and LionCoat").

What can the reader conclude about Scrooge from this excerpt from Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol?
Now, being prepared for almost anything, he was not by any means prepared for nothing; and, consequently, when the Bell struck One, and no shape appeared, he was taken with a violent fit of trembling. Five minutes, ten minutes, a quarter of an hour went by, yet nothing came. All this time, he lay upon his bed, the very core and centre of a blaze of ruddy light, which streamed upon it when the clock proclaimed the hour; and which, being only light, was more alarming than a dozen ghosts, as he was powerless to make out what it meant, or would be at; and was sometimes apprehensive that he might be at that very moment an interesting case of spontaneous combustion, without having the consolation of knowing it. At last, however, he began to think—as you or I would have thought at first; for it is always the person not in the predicament who knows what ought to have been done in it, and would unquestionably have done it too—at last, I say, he began to think that the source and secret of this ghostly light might be in the adjoining room, from whence, on further tracing it, it seemed to shine. This idea taking full possession of his mind, he got up softly and shuffled in his slippers to the door.

A.
Scrooge is excited about what will happen next, so he feels angry when the ghost appears to be late.
B.
Scrooge is disturbed by the ghost's presence, so he’s unable to sleep for more than a couple of minutes.
C.
Scrooge is very particular about time, so he starts getting restless when the ghost doesn’t arrive at its appointed time.
D.
Scrooge is alert even in his old age, so he’s prepared for anything the ghost will throw at him.
E.
Scrooge is fearful but curious about the ghost, so he puts his slippers on and goes to the room where the light is shining.

ALL CHILDREN'S' CLOSE ARE ON SALE what is wrong with this

Answers

Answer:All childrens CLOTHES are on sale

Explanation:not close its clothes

"The correct format for the given sentence is: ""ALL CHILDREN'S CLOTHES ARE ON SALE.""

The original sentence contains several errors:

1. The apostrophe in ""CHILDREN'S"" is incorrect because it implies possession, as in ""the children's clothes,"" which means clothes belonging to the children. In the context of a sale sign, the intended meaning is that all clothes designed for children are on sale, not that all clothes belonging to children are on sale. Therefore, the possessive form is not needed.

2. The word ""CLOSE"" is incorrect and should be ""CLOTHES."" ""Close"" is a verb meaning to shut or to come to an end, while ""clothes"" is a noun referring to items of dress.

3. The phrase ""what is wrong with this"" is a request for correction or identification of errors, which has been addressed by reformatting the sentence.

4. The use of ""<br />"" suggests a line break in HTML, which is not necessary in the context of a sentence and does not contribute to the meaning or grammar of the sentence.

By correcting these errors, the sentence clearly communicates that there is a sale on all children's clothing."

Out of spite, the human beings pretended not to believe that it was Snowball who had destroyed the windmill: they said that it had fallen down because the walls were too thin. The animals knew that this was not the case. Still, it had been decided to build the walls three feet thick this time instead of eighteen inches as before, which meant collecting much larger quantities of stone. For a long time the quarry was full of snowdrifts and nothing could be done. Some progress was made in the dry frosty weather that followed, but it was cruel work, and the animals could not feel so hopeful about it as they had felt before. They were always cold, and usually hungry as well. Only Boxer and Clover never lost heart. Squealer made excellent speeches on the joy of service and the dignity of labour, but the other animals found more inspiration in Boxer's strength and his never-failing cry of "I will work harder!" Which detail from the text best demonstrates the effect of totalitarianism on the animals?

Gil Meche, a 32 years old right baseball pitcher, had a contract that called for a $12 million
salary in 2011.
Meche knew his team had hired to be a starting pitcher and pitch many innings." His
deteriorating shoulder, which was surgically repaired twice in 2001, would not allow him to do
that. And, as a divorced father of three, he believed his children - ages 7, 5 and 3 - needed him
more than his teammates did.
To keep self-respect, Meche retired before the 2011 baseball season, which means he will
not be paid at all. "When I signed my contract, my main goal was to earn it," Meche said. "Once I
started to realize I wasn't earning my money, I felt bad. I was making a crazy amount of money
for not even pitching. Honestly, I didn't feel like I deserved it. I didn't want to have those
feelings again."
"This isn't about being a hero – that's not even close to what it's about," Meche said.
"It's just me getting back to a point in my life where I'm comfortable. Making that amount of
money from a team that's already given me over $40 million for my life and for my kids, it just
wasn't the right thing to do."
"He gave his heart and soul to his profession,"his team's manager said. "You only have so
many throws in you." Meche knew he had no throws left, that he could achieve more, and he
would not pretend otherwise. He said his dream in baseball was always simple - to pitch as long
as he could - and now that he has achieved it, he needs nothing more.

1. Which sentence contains a misplaced modifier?

a. Amber tumbling in the mat awed the judges.

b. Amber awed the judges when she was tumbling on the mat.

c. Amber awed the judges tumbling on the mat.

d. Tumbling on the mat, Amber awed the judges.

Answers

Answer:

C. Amber awed the judges tumbling on the mat.

Explanation:

This sentence makes it seem like the judges were tumbling on the mat while Amber awed them. Compared to the other sentences, this isn't correct.

Final answer:

The sentence with a misplaced modifier is 'Amber tumbling in the mat awed the judges.' The modifier should be positioned so it's clear that Amber is the one performing the action of tumbling.

Explanation:

The sentence that contains a misplaced modifier is:

a. Amber tumbling in the mat awed the judges.

This sentence is not clear about whether Amber or the judges are tumbling on the mat. The correct sentence should place the modifier so that it clearly refers to Amber tumbling, as in 'Amber awed the judges by tumbling on the mat.' This avoids ambiguity by ensuring that the modifier 'tumbling on the mat' clearly specifies who performed the action.

To fix a dangling modifier, you need to make sure the action described by the modifier clearly relates to the subject performing the action. For instance, 'Tumbling on the mat, Amber awed the judges' shows that it is Amber who is performing the tumbling action and not the judges.

Using modifiers correctly is important because they add detail and clarity when they are placed next to the word they are modifying. When a modifier is misplaced, it can often lead to confusion or an unintended meaning.

According to the author, what is most responsible for influencing our perception of a comparison between species?

Answers

Answer: The organizational scheme imposed on the living world by researchers and philosophers .

Explanation:

To figure this out, you need to understand the content, form, and function of the text.

The author opens by explaining how "the world can be classified in different ways," which is in line 1, and it states that "the classifications determine which comparisons seem natural or unnatural, which literal or analogical," which are in lines 3-6. The passage then shows how comparisons differ according to which system of classification is used.

Final Answer:

The author suggests that our perception of a comparison between species is most influenced by cultural factors.

Explanation:

The author implies that cultural context plays a significant role in shaping our perception of comparisons between species. Cultural beliefs, values, and norms influence how we interpret and evaluate relationships between different organisms. For example, societies that prioritize human dominance over nature may view interspecies comparisons in terms of hierarchical power dynamics, whereas cultures that emphasize ecological interconnectedness may perceive such comparisons through a lens of symbiotic relationships.

Additionally, societal attitudes towards specific species, informed by historical, religious, and philosophical narratives, further shape our perceptions of interspecies comparisons. Therefore, the author implies that cultural influences significantly impact how we conceptualize and understand the relationships between different species.

Read the excerpt from the fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” and answer the question that follows. Hard by a great forest dwelt a poor wood-cutter with his wife and his two children. The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel. He had little to bite and to break, and once when great dearth fell on the land, he could no longer procure even daily bread. Now when he thought over this by night in his bed, and tossed about in his anxiety, he groaned and said to his wife: "What is to become of us? How are we to feed our poor children, when we no longer have anything even for ourselves?" "I'll tell you what, husband," answered the woman, "early tomorrow morning we will take the children out into the forest to where it is the thickest; there we will light a fire for them, and give each of them one more piece of bread, and then we will go to our work and leave them alone. They will not find the way home again, and we shall be rid of them." "No, wife," said the man, "I will not do that; how can I bear to leave my children alone in the forest?—the wild animals would soon come and tear them to pieces." "O, you fool!" said she, "then we must all four die of hunger, you may as well plane the planks for our coffins," and she left him no peace until he consented. "But I feel very sorry for the poor children, all the same," said the man. The two children had also not been able to sleep for hunger, and had heard what their stepmother had said to their father. Gretel wept bitter tears, and said to Hansel: "Now all is over with us." "Be quiet, Gretel," said Hansel, "do not distress yourself, I will soon find a way to help us." And when the old folks had fallen asleep, he got up, put on his little coat, opened the door below, and crept outside. The moon shone brightly, and the white pebbles which lay in front of the house glittered like real silver pennies. Hansel stooped and stuffed the little pocket of his coat with as many as he could get in. Then he went back and said to Gretel: "Be comforted, dear little sister, and sleep in peace, God will not forsake us," and he lay down again in his bed. When day dawned, but before the sun had risen, the woman came and awoke the two children, saying: "Get up, you sluggards! we are going into the forest to fetch wood." She gave each a little piece of bread, and said: "There is something for your dinner, but do not eat it up before then, for you will get nothing else." Gretel took the bread under her apron, as Hansel had the pebbles in his pocket. Then they all set out together on the way to the forest. When they had walked a short time, Hansel stood still and peeped back at the house, and did so again and again. His father said: "Hansel, what are you looking at there and staying behind for? Pay attention, and do not forget how to use your legs." "Ah, father," said Hansel, "I am looking at my little white cat, which is sitting up on the roof, and wants to say goodbye to me." The wife said: "Fool, that is not your little cat, that is the morning sun which is shining on the chimneys." Hansel, however, had not been looking back at the cat, but had been constantly throwing one of the white pebble-stones out of his pocket on the road. When they had reached the middle of the forest, the father said: "Now, children, pile up some wood, and I will light a fire that you may not be cold." Hansel and Gretel gathered brushwood together, as high as a little hill. The brushwood was lighted, and when the flames were burning very high, the woman said: "Now, children, lay yourselves down by the fire and rest, we will go into the forest and cut some wood. When we have done, we will come back and fetch you away." Hansel and Gretel sat by the fire, and when noon came, each ate a little piece of bread, and as they heard the strokes of the wood-axe they believed that their father was near. It was not the axe, however, but a branch which he had fastened to a withered tree which the wind was blowing backwards and forwards. And as they had been sitting such a long time, their eyes closed with fatigue, and they fell fast asleep. When at last they awoke, it was already dark night. Gretel began to cry and said: "How are we to get out of the forest now?" But Hansel comforted her and said: "Just wait a little, until the moon has risen, and then we will soon find the way." And when the full moon had risen, Hansel took his little sister by the hand, and followed the pebbles which shone like newly-coined silver pieces, and showed them the way. Which is the most effective way to vary the sentences in the passage?

Combine sentences with coordinating conjunctions.

Invert sentences by putting verbs before subjects.

Begin sentences with different parts of speech.

Answers

Answer: Combine sentences with coordinating conjunctions.

Explanation: This would help because it would allow the sentences to be longer and would reduce the repetition in the passage. For example:

"Can you imagine paying a year's salary for a single tulip bulb? During the early 1600s, wealthy investors in Holland did just that during a craze for tulips that later became known as "Tulip Mania". The seemingly unusual flower was introduced to Europe around 1550, inducing interest of itself as the civilians had never seen it before. Compared to the buds native to Europe, the Tulips had more attracting, vibrant colors. Due to this, the price of the blossoming beauties rocketed, attracting the attention of investors over in the ever-flourishing economy of Holland. The interest and demand for tulips led the investors to believe that their popularity would reign much longer than it did. In 1637, the sky-high prices of the alluring florets suddenly crashed. The once famous Tulip bulbs that once held a high price was suddenly dirt cheap, causing the decrease in demand. The Tulip Mania era was over, and the once beloved blossoms were no longer held with such high regard."reads more fluently than the original text. Hope this helps! ^u^
