how does this paragraph develop the characters in the dialogue?

Answers

Answer:

it makes them seem more in depth

Explanation:

The correct option is: It shows that Adam is afraid of what is in the water, and Laura is fearless and likes to tease him.

In the excerpt, the paragraph develops the characters through their actions and dialogue. Adam's hesitation and fear of the crabs in the tidal pool contrast with Laura's fearless and adventurous nature.

Adam's reaction of wincing and nearly screaming when Laura scoops up a crab shows his apprehension, while Laura's teasing response and casual handling of the crab highlight her bold and daring personality. This interaction between the characters reveals their contrasting traits and sets the stage for potential character development and dynamics throughout the narrative.

The paragraph effectively develops the characters by illustrating Adam's fear and Laura's fearlessness through their reactions and dialogue in the situation with the crabs. This contrast in their personalities creates tension and sets the tone for their relationship and interactions in the narrative.

In a short story taking place in the forest, the sounds of the forest animals
and insects are described at length. What choice might a filmmaker adapting
the short story make instead of describing the sounds?
O
A. Remove the sounds from the film
O
B. Create a dramatic sound mix to present the sounds to the
audience
O
C. Change the setting to avoid the forest sounds
O
D. Have one of the film's characters comment on the sounds

Answers

Answer:

i think its B but im not too sure, D sounds correct as well.

The correct answer is B. Create a dramatic sound mix to present the sounds to the audience

Explanation:

In short stories and other literary works, authors rely mainly on written descriptions, dialogues or monologues to present elements such as characters, settings, actions, etc. However, when these literary works are adapted into films, descriptions are not used as the use of a narrator is not common in films, instead filmmakers rely on actions of characters and show elements instead of describing them. This means, in the case of a short story set in a forest, the best for adapting this is to let the audience hear the sounds of the forest instead of describing them and thus, the correct answer is "create a dramatic sound mix to present the sounds to the audience".

Select a theme from Julius Caesar, select a theme and explain how it is developed throughout the play. Use evidence from the play itself. Please in 2-3 paragraphs. Strongly support claims, this is worth most of my grade. (From the Julius Caesar play written by Shakespeare

Answers

Note to Cynatory:

There are many themes in Julius Caesar (e.g. betrayal, ambition, honor, love) and chances are you might violate academic integrity if I write this for you and you submit it as your own work.

So, tell you what -- I've chosen deceit as my theme but I'm going to answer this question in such a way where you will have to do some work on your own such as, giving more textual support and adding your own POV so it's authentic.

Does that sound good? Okay. Let's do this.

In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, countless occasions of deception have arisen primarily due to Brutus.

Brutus was a deceitful,  murderous apostate who betrayed his country, his morals, his friend, and his king; his violent actions took more lives than Caesar ever could.

Brutus was the original, Judas Iscariot; he was a deceitful follower of Caesar who sold his king for nearly thirty, excruciating stab wounds. However, Brutus claimed to be Caesar’s faithful friend and disciple – he insisted that Rome always had his loyalty.

Brutus was a soft-spoken, yet troubled soul. He is applauded for his empathy and loyalty to morality and to his countrymen. In fact, when Cassius had raised the proposition to kill Antony along with Caesar, Brutus answered as such:

“Let us be sacrificers, but not butchers, Caius.”

However, this is not out of character for Brutus. He craftily schemed Caesar’s demise while putting on a carefully fabricated façade. Even then, Caesar valued him and referred to him many times as “friend” throughout his final days.

Caesar voices, “Good friends, go in, and taste some wine with me; And we, like friends, will straightway go together.”

Brutus, like Judas at the Passover, also went, reclined and drank wine with his lord, fully knowing that he’d take part in the death of his liege.

Although there is truth in Brutus’s guise, it is far cry from what he truly felt.  His speech after Caesar’s death was a beautiful eulogy that spoke from the heart. He poses this thoughtful question his fellow countrymen:

“Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?”

Brutus adored Caesar, but he loved Rome more. His duty was not to man, but to mankind.  Nevertheless, Judas claimed to love Christ too. Where do Judas and Christ stand now?

Brutus states:

“Our course will seem too bloody, Caius Cassius.”

Brutus acknowledged that that his actions were bloody. His statement also implies that if it didn’t “seem” to bloody, then killing Antony could have been justifiable also.

Brutus, one of the twelve major figures in Julius Caesar, was not a deceiver.

“Shall Rome stand under one man's awe? What, Rome?”

Brutus’s statement is laced with contempt. Rather than saying, “Rome should, as a people…” he singles out Caesar and undermines his figure. He says “one man” seeking to portray Caesar as a weak leader rather than appealing to his audience by promoting a “we the people” stance.

He attempts to trick his audience into believing that Caesar is inept. After all, the art of pleasing is the art of deceiving, is it not?

This was my speech:

Julius Ceasar was a book filled with greed, corruption, and ambition.  But the biggest theme of the whole book was power.  Ceasar had so much power and was going to turn the city into becoming a dictatorship.  His friends decided to kill him so he wouldn't ruin the city.

As you can see from these examples in the book Cassius says:

" CASSIUS

Why, he that cuts off twenty years of life

Cuts off so many years of fearing death.

BRUTUS

Grant that, and then is death a benefit.

So are we Caesar's friends, that have abridged

His time of fearing death. Stoop, Romans, stoop,

And let us bathe our hands in Caesar's blood

Up to the elbows, and besmear our swords."  This means that after stabbing Caesar in the back, Cassius and Brutus reason that they've done their pal a favor: now that Caesar's death, he no longer has to worry about dying. Then Brutus has another good idea – the conspirators should wash their hands in their friend's blood to signal that they've freed Rome from tyranny.

In conclusion, this story relates to real-life because many people have a way to much power and need to be put to an end.  The only difference is that you could just kill them in the book but in real life that's not exactly an option.

2. To stop (someone engaged in an activity) by saying or doing something: The baby interrupted me while I was on the phone.

The word interrupt means to break the continuity of a conversation or activity by intervening or inserting oneself into it without invitation. It can be seen as a form of disruption or interference with the ongoing process. What literary device of the phrase “never say never?”

Answers

The literary device is Paradox.

A paradox is the literary device of the phrase “never say never”. A paradox is a contradictory phrase. This means that it does exactly what it says it should not do. In the phrase "never say never", the paradox occurs because the phrase is using "never" to tell you not to say it. Therefore, it is contradicting itself.

Further explanation

Paradoxes can be confusing because that is exactly what they are - confusing! They make a statement that seems ridiculous but actually can reveal a probable truth. Things can also be described as a paradox using the adjective form: paradoxical.

One of the famous literary paradoxes can be found in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Hamlet says that he must be "cruel to be kind". In this paradox, Hamlet is contradicting himself because cruel and kind are opposites; and yet, he must do one to accomplish the other.

It is important to note here that paradoxes are not just a literary device. When referred to as a literary device, they are specifically about what is written in a text. However, the word paradox can also refer to events that are contradictory when speaking of a situation that is seemingly impossible to scientifically explain.

Read the excerpt from Julius Caesar, act 1, scene 1.

[FLAVIUS.] See whether their basest metal be not moved.
60

They vanish tongue-tied in their guiltiness.
Go you down that way towards the Capitol;
This way will I. Disrobe the images,
If you do find them decked with ceremonies.
MARULLUS. May we do so?
65

You know it is the feast of Lupercal.
FLAVIUS. It is no matter; let no images
Be hung with Caesar’s trophies. I’ll about,
And drive away the vulgar from the streets:
So do you too, where you perceive them thick.
Which paraphrase of the passage is the most accurate?
Flavius says, “See whether their basest metal be not moved. They vanish tongue-tied in their guiltiness.” Then he tells Marullus where to go to “disrobe the images.” Marullus protests because it is the feast of Lupercal, but Flavius tells him that it does not matter. Flavius says, “Let no images be hung with Caesar’s trophies,” and tells Marullus to clean up the streets.
Flavius and Marullus decide to wipe the streets clean of homage to Caesar and to chase away those who want to celebrate him.
Flavius and Marullus talk about who should complete what task to clear the streets.
Flavius hopes that he has changed the high spirits of the people in the streets and sends them away before Caesar sees them. He instructs Marullus to go toward the capitol, while he himself goes the other way to take down any images of Caesar or decorations on his statues. Marullus wants to know if that is OK, because everyone is celebrating the feast of Lupercal. Flavius does not care, and he tells Marullus to do as he says and send the crowds home.

Answers

I thought there would be a question after this ...

Answer: The right answer is the D) Flavius hopes that he has changed the high spirits of the people in the streets and sends them away before Caesar sees them.

Explanation: When you paraphrase a text, you express its meaning using different words, in order to render it clearly and succinctly, so option A should be discarded. Likewise, in this excerpt Flavius and Marullus are not discussing who should clear the streets, so option B should be also discarded. Option C is accurate, but too brief; it acts more like a summary. In this passage Flavius is indeed congratulating himself for having convinced the commoners to go home instead of being outdoors celebrating Caesar's triumph, and he is instructing Marullus to remove images or decorations honoring Caesar, despite Marullus's reluctance —since it is the feast of Lupercal— as well as to continue forcing people off the streets.

Final answer:

Comparison and contrast are rhetorical methods used in writing to analyze two subjects by highlighting their similarities and differences. This strategy employs phrases of comparison or contrast to guide the reader through the analysis and is especially useful for redefining terms or concepts. It's a common method used in high school level English writing, speeches, and essays.

Explanation:

Comparison and Contrast in Writing

When structuring your speech or document, using a comparison/contrast speech pattern involves comparing and contrasting two similar objects, topics, or ideas. This method can be used to show the similarities (comparison) or the differences (contrast) between the two subjects, which can help clarify concepts or extend definitions. It is often used in essays and speeches to help the audience understand the nature of the subjects by relating them to each other.

To effectively use this method in writing, you may utilize phrases of comparison or phrases of contrast to signal to the readers or listeners how the two subjects are being analyzed. This rhetorical strategy is particularly beneficial when you need your audience to grasp what something is and what it is not, as in the case of redefining a term or idea.

For instance, you might be comparing drug addiction to diseases like AIDS or cancer to argue that addiction should be viewed as a medical issue rather than a criminal justice issue. Alternatively, to establish contrast, you could highlight the differences between addiction and other illnesses to argue against this view. Words like 'by contrast,' 'in comparison,' and 'while,' among others, can be essential tools in establishing your point.

To achieve a well-organized compare-and-contrast essay, you may opt for a two-point structure that focuses directly on comparing and contrasting, or you could introduce a third point that offers background information on the subjects before delving into the comparison and contrast.

This excerpt is from “The Poet” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The poem describes a poet's consciousness and perception. Which 3 lines suggest the richness of a poet's thoughts?
Thus truth was multiplied on truth, (the world
Like one great garden show'd),
And thro' the wreaths of floating dark upcurl'd,
Rare sunrise flow'd.

Her beautiful bold brow,
When rites and forms before his burning eyes
Melted like snow.

(There was no blood upon her maiden robes)
Sunn'd by those orient skies;
But round about the circles of the globes
Of her keen eyes

And in her raiment's hem was traced in flame
WISDOM, a name to shake
(All evil dreams of power--a sacred name).
And when she spake,

(Her words did gather thunder as they ran),
And as the lightning to the thunder
Which follows it, riving the spirit of man,
Making earth wonder,

So was their meaning to her words.
No sword
Of wrath her right arm whirl'd,
(But one poor poet's scroll, and with 'his' word)
She shook the world.

Read this passage from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In what way could most readers connect Huck's experience to their own experiences?

I set down one time back in the woods, and had a long think about it. I says to myself, if a body can get anything they pray for, why don't Deacon
Winn get back the money he lost on pork? Why can't the widow get back her silver snuffbox that was stole? Why can't Miss Watson fat up? No,
says I to myself, there ain't nothing in it. I went and told the widow about it, and she said the thing a body could get by praying for it was "spiritual
gifts." This was too many for me, but she told me what she meant-I must help other people, and do everything I could for other people, and look
out for them all the time, and never think about myself. This was including Miss Watson, as I took it. I went out in the woods and turned it over in
my mind a long time, but I couldn't see no advantage about it-except for the other people; so at last I reckoned I wouldn't worry about it anymore,
but just let it go.

a) Everyone has experienced going to the woods to think things through

b) Everyone has experienced not being able to understand something.

c) Everyone has experienced praying for things and getting them.

d) Everyone has experience being raised by an adoptive or foster parent.

Answers

Answer:

The answer is D.

Explanation:

Trust me, I had the same question as you.

Answer:

b) Everyone has experienced not being able to understand something.

Explanation:

This is the only option that truly represents something that everyone can relate to. In this passage, Huck explains how he was confused by the idea of "spiritual gifts." Even though he thought about it a lot, and the widow explained it to him, he is still confused about the concept. The reader can most likely relate to this experience because everyone has experienced not being able to understand something.

Why did the watchmen retreat? A. They were cowards B. They remembered the last murder C. They bribed before hand by the pirates D. They were informed earlier about Mr. Taft’s plan

Answers

Answer:

D). They were informed earlier about Mr. Taft’s plan.

Explanation:

The watchman retreated as they had been informed previously about Mr. Taft's plan. The evidence to this claim is provided within the sentence as it says "wisely retreated" and "it was in the plan for them to retreat" that clearly portrays the purpose of watchman and Mr. Taft to withdraw their boat "before so overwhelming a force". Thus, option D is the correct answer.

What is the speaker suggesting in the lines below from Walt Whitman's poem
"Song of Myself"?
I depart as air...
I effuse my flesh in eddies, and drift it in lacy jags

Answers

Answer:

In this passage, Whitman is celebrating how the death and life of his self and his body are interconnected with the natural world.

Explanation:

When we die, the physical substance of the body—literally the molecules of the flesh—rot away to become once again a part of the natural world. But the same thing is true when we are living. We breathe in the molecules of the air, which become a part of us, even as they began as a part of other things. "Song of Myself" is all about these kinds of transcendent connections. Whitman is celebrating his "self" ("I celebrate myself, and sing myself"), but he's doing so by acknowledging the ways his self relies on the forces and energies and bodies of the natural and human worlds around him.

The winter was as cold as the last one had been, and food was even shorter. Once again all rations were reduced, except those of the pigs and the dogs. A too rigid equality in rations, Squealer explained, would have been contrary to the principles of Animalism. In any case he had no difficulty in proving to the other animals that they were NOT in reality short of food, whatever the appearances might be. For the time being, certainly, it had been found necessary to make a readjustment of rations (Squealer always spoke of it as a "readjustment," never as a "reduction"), but in comparison with the days of Jones, the improvement was enormous. Reading out the figures in a shrill, rapid voice, he proved to them in detail that they had more oats, more hay, more turnips than they had had in Jones's day, that they worked shorter hours, that their drinking water was of better quality, that they lived longer, that a larger proportion of their young ones survived infancy, and that they had more straw in their stalls and suffered less from fleas. The animals believed every word of it. Truth to tell, Jones and all he stood for had almost faded out of their memories. They knew that life nowadays was harsh and bare, that they were often hungry and often cold, and that they were usually working when they were not asleep. But doubtless it had been worse in the old days. They were glad to believe so. Besides, in those days they had been slaves and now they were free, and that made all the difference, as Squealer did not fail to point out.How does this passage demonstrate the use of propaganda?
