Final answer:

The question requires identifying proper and common nouns in sentences. Proper nouns, specific names, identified include 'United States,' 'Alaska,' 'Kansas,' 'Mojave Desert,' 'California,' 'Arizona,' 'Washington,' 'Minnesota,' 'Florida,' 'Everglades,' 'Rocky Mountains.' Common nouns, general terms, identified include 'regions,' 'weather,' 'climate,' 'polar bears,' 'cold climate,' 'flat plains,' 'wheat,' 'desert,' 'day,' 'large amounts,' 'rain,' 'state,' 'lakes,' 'home,' 'swamp,' 'mountains,' 'beauty,' 'winter.'

Explanation:

The question asks us to identify and classify different kinds of nouns in various sentences. First, we need to recognize that a proper noun is the name of a specific individual, place, or object and is always capitalized. Examples include 'United States,' 'Alaska,' 'Kansas,' 'Mojave Desert,' 'California,' 'Arizona,' 'Washington,' 'Minnesota,' 'Florida,' 'Everglades,' 'Rocky Mountains.'

On the other hand, common nouns are general, non-specific terms for people, places, or things. For example, 'regions,' 'weather,' 'climate,' 'polar bears,' 'cold climate,' 'flat plains,' 'wheat,' 'desert,' 'day,' 'large amounts,' 'rain,' 'state,' 'lakes,' 'home,' 'swamp,' 'mountains,' 'beauty,' 'winter.'

In summary, the difference lies in their specificity - proper nouns are specific names and are always capitalized, while common nouns are general terms for people, places, or objects.

B Walt Whitman's poems express an amazing joie de vivre. (Italics)
C Walt Whitman's poems express an amazing joie de vivre. (No italics)
D Walt Whitman's poems express an amazing 'joie de vivre." (No italics)

Answers

Final answer:

The correct sentence is B, which uses italics to emphasize the foreign phrase 'joie de vivre,' in line with English writing conventions.

Explanation:

The correctly written sentence is B: Walt Whitman's poems express an amazing joie de vivre. When quoting foreign phrases that are not fully assimilated into English or when using words as words, such as in an analysis, it is appropriate to use italics for emphasis. This fits with standard conventions for integrating quotations in English writing, where it is essential to maintain grammatical integrity and clarity in distinguishing the author's voice from quoted material, as seen with Whitman and other poets.

The cashiers’ wages were docked for two weeks in a row.

Answers

Answer:

The cashiers’ wages were docked for two weeks in a row.

Explanation:

Apsotrophes when used in plural come after the S, and can still use possession. However weeks is not plural and can't possess anything

The correct answer is C. The cashiers’ wages were docked for two weeks in a row.

Explanation:

One of the main functions of an apostrophe is to show the relationship between two nouns, especially in terms of possession. For example in "Patrick's bag is blue" the apostrophe shows the blue bag belongs to Patrick. Besides this, apostrophes can be used for contractions as in "She's young".

According to this, the correct sentence is "The cashiers’ wages were docked for two weeks in a row" because it is correct to use the apostrophe to show the wages belong to the cashiers or are related to them. Also, it is not necessary to add more apostrophes in the sentence because there are no contractions or any other noun that owns something.

What are two goals of feminist literary criticism? Select two options.

to focus exclusively on female authors and female characters
to explore restrictions placed on female characters in patriarchal societies
to explore emotional rather than political or historical aspects of literature
to evaluate the work of female authors who may be unappreciated
to evaluate why female authors are morally superior to male authors

Answers

Answer:

to explore restrictions placed on female characters in patriarchal societies to evaluate the work of female authors who may be unappreciated

Explanation:

The ultimate goal of feminist literary criticism is to uncover and expose patriarchal and underlying tensions within novels and to interrogate the ways in which our base of literary assumptions about such novels are contingent upon female subordination. In this way, the accessibility of the literature broadens the population more comprehensively. In addition, works that historically have received little or no attention, given the history of restrictions on female authorship in some cultures, are capable of being analyzed in their original and integral form. This brings about a wide collection of books for all readers, as all the great works of literature are given without exposing bias towards the influence of the gender system.

Feminist literary criticism aims to examine gender representation and power dynamics in literature, focusing on the way female characters are portrayed in patriarchal societies and evaluating the unrecognized work of female authors.

The goals of feminist literary criticism are to challenge and reveal literary representations of gender, explore the power dynamics within texts, and uncover historical, political, and social contexts that influence gender perceptions and relations. Two key objectives could be:

To explore restrictions placed on female characters in patriarchal societies, thereby examining how gender roles and expectations are depicted and reinforced in literature. To evaluate the work of female authors who may have been historically marginalized or unappreciated, looking at how their writings challenge or complicate traditional gender norms and literary conventions.

Feminist literary criticism is not about claiming moral superiority of female authors over male authors or focusing solely on emotional aspects of literature to the exclusion of the political or historical. It is a varied practice that may involve analyzing the psychology of characters, critiquing the social and power structures in a narrative, or investigating the mythical and archetypal content in stories.

Some people think that modern technology is making people more sociable, while other think it is making them less sociable. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Answers

Hello There!

I attached my opinion in Image Below.

According to some people technological innovations have made people more sociable; however, others disagree with that view. In my opinion modern technology is making people more sociable but at the same time it hinders the face to face interaction among people. I will explain my view in this essay.
On the one hand, it is an irrefutable fact that modern technology has shrunk our big planet earth into a small global village. Now it is possible for a person to contact his kith and kin who are sitting on the other side of the planet with the use of the internet and mobile phones or laptops on a regular basis. This frequent contact among family members and friends strengthens the bond. Moreover, with the advent of fast transport systems / services like metro trains, bullet trains and flights the distance and travel time has minimised and it is now possible for people to visit their relatives living in other countries or states more frequently. Obviously, technology has increased the interactions among people.

On the other hand, sometimes, children and adults become so obsessed with technology that they avoid in-person interaction with their relatives and friends. Children become so engrossed with new gadgets that they avoid spending time with their parents and friends. What is more, with the advent of e-commerce and various other websites now people are able to buy commodities of daily need or pay their bills online and this again has limited the actual interaction among people.
To conclude, I reiterate that modern technology has given people a platform to stay in touch with their loved ones but at the same time it has taken out face to face interactions from the equation.
